Dr. Schmalensee is a Howard W. Johnson emeritus professor of management and economics and dean emeritus in the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Teaching at MIT since 1967, he also taught for seven years at the University of California in San Diego as an assistant, then associate professor of economics, and was a visiting associate professor and research fellow at the University of Louvain in Belgium and a visiting professor at Harvard Business School. Notably, Dr. Schmalensee acquired both a Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. in economics at MIT in 1965 and 1970, respectively.
Noting that being a dean of a business school is much like being a branch manager for a private company, Dr. Schmalensee was engaged in a wide range of responsibilities. From human resources to fundraising, there was never a dull moment. While serving as dean, however, he was able to set up an advisory counsel for the very first time. Throughout his career at MIT, which is one of the country's leading institutions in the areas of science and technology, Dr. Schmalensee had also become a recognized expert on regulation and antitrust policy. Having served on the President's Council of Economic Advisers and for contributing testimony in the Microsoft anti-trust trial, where he testified as an expert witness in favor of Microsoft, he was also an expert on energy and environmental policy. He formerly served on the National Commission on Energy Policy, chaired the Board of Resources for the Future, and was a member of the executive committee of the Board of the National Bureau of Economics Research.
Serving on countless other boards, committees, and professional journals during his career, Dr. Schmalensee has been known for his many contributions as a writer. Recently authoring "Matchmakers" with D.S. Evans through the Boston: Harvard Business School Press in 2016, which deals with the economics of and management challenges faced by multi-sided platform businesses, he also authored "Socialism for Red States in the Electric Utility Industry" in the Journal of Competition Law and Economics, Vol. 12, No. 3, in 2016, and "Lessons Learned from Three Decades of Experience with Cap-and-Trade" with R. Stavins in the Review of Environmental Economics and Policy, Vol. 11, No. 1, in 2017. Dr. Schmalensee began writing in the early 1970s when he authored three books: "The Economics of Advertising," "Applied Microeconomics" and "The Control of Natural Monopolies." He then continued by co-authoring and co-editing several other books with other authors.
Currently the director of The Global Economics Group, chairman and board of directors of the Resources for the Future, and board of directors of the National Bureau of Economic Research, Dr. Schmalensee is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and the Econometric Society, member of the International Academy of Management and the American Economic Association, and a former Eagle Scout.
During his tenure, Dr. Schmalensee earned numerous grants from the National Science Foundation. He was recognized in 2012 as a Distinguished Fellow by the Industrial Organization Society and was the co-recipient of an Edward A. Hewett Prize from the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies in 1995. Highlighted in over 50 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business and Who's Who in the World, he has been married to his wife, Edeth Diane Hawk, for 50 years. Dr. Schmalensee has two sons.
