Throughout the course of his career, he has published more than 300 papers, including a paper on antibiotics and asthma exacerbations in the New England Journal of Medicine. His most recent journal contributions include, "Airway and serum biochemical correlates of refractory neutrophilic asthma" in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, "The nasal methyloma: A key to understanding allergic asthma in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and "Risk of pneumonia in obstructive lung disease: A real-life study comparing extra-fine and fine-particle corticosteroids" in PLoS One.
As a Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine with National Jewish Health, Dr. Martin focuses on basic, translational and clinical research, with a focus on airway inflammation in asthma and COPD. He is also recognized as a faculty member in the Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Division with the University of Colorado and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Martin is involved in a joint venture with National Jewish Health and Mount Sinai that led to the development of the Mount Sinai National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute. At the present moment, he is serving as a member of the institute's board of directors.
A committed researcher, Dr. Martin has received multiple research grants since 1978. He was the principal investigator for a $7.5 million, multicenter study on the effect of mycoplasma bacteria on chronic asthma. Dr. Martin also led the National Jewish segment of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's Asthma Clinical Research Network and AsthmaNet. In addition, he holds a U.S. patent entitled "Diagnosing Asthma Patients Predisposed to Adverse Beta-Agonist Reactions." For more than three decades, Dr. Martin has been recognized as a visiting professor at dozens of national and international universities.
Inspired by his father, an internationally-renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Martin chose to pursue a career in medicine as a young child. He went on to attend the University of Michigan, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in 1967 and MD in 1971. Since then, Dr. Martin has completed an internship through the Good Samaritan Hospital, residency through Tulane University and fellowship through the University of Oklahoma. While completing a pulmonary rotation during his internship, he fell in love with pulmonary medicine and critical care. Among other notable achievements, Dr. Martin has been listed among the Top 1 Percent of Pulmonary Physicians and Best Doctors in America in Pulmonary Medicine.
Dr. Martin maintains involvement with a variety of medical organizations, including the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology; European Respiratory Society; American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, American College of Chest Physicians; American College of Physicians; American Federation for Clinical Research; and American Thoracic Society.
A diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Martin was initially recruited by National Jewish Health in 1980. Early in his career, he was mentored by one of the grandfathers of pulmonary physiology, Dr. Reuben Cherniack. Dr. Martin has served as chair of the department of medicine with National Jewish Health since 2004. In recognition of his contributions to the field of medicine, he was selected to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from National Jewish Health in 2015. Dr. Martin has also been featured in a wide range of honor publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the West.
