With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Brown has been professor emeritus of Illinois Wesleyan University since 2002. Prior to his retirement, he worked with the school as a professor of theatre arts from 1989 to 2002, also serving as director of the program from 1989 to 1999. From 1965 to 1989, he worked at Western Illinois University as an assistant professor, associate professor, and professor of theatre, serving as acting chair of the department of theatre from 1977 to 1978, and as academic director of the Semester Abroad in London Program from 1979 to 1980. Earlier in his career, he worked at the University of Minnesota as an instructor in the Department of Communication from 1964 to 1965, and a teaching assistant of theatre from 1963 to 1964, and as an instructor with the St. Paul Public School System from 1962 to 1963.
Dr. Brown began his career as a student at Ithaca College, obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama in 1960. He went on to complete a Master of Arts in Theatre with San Francisco State University in 1962, and a PhD in speech and theatre with the University of Minnesota in 1967. Before going into a career in academia, he began acting on many radio and television programs, including "Lassie" and "The Adventures of Hiram Holliday."
A respected voice in the field, Dr. Brown has served as panel chairman of the Illinois Theater Association Convention, a panel discussant of the Association of Theater in Higher Education Convention, and a judge of the American College of Theater Festival. He has authored six books, including the 2009 "Mind the Gap and 2 Other Mysteries" and the 2006 "Moss Hart, A Prince of the Theatre," Back Stage Books. He contributed chapters to several books by other authors and contributed articles in several related publications. In addition, he has written nearly 20 plays such as "Old Hoss," which was performed at the McLean County Historical Society in March 2014, as well as numerous short plays written for the Chamber of Commerce Gala in January 2012. He has also directed about 100 plays, including "Anything Goes," "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie," "Bye Bye Birdie," "The Merchant of Venice," and "Death of a Salesman." He is the founding director of The International Film Series in Macomb, IL, and he has served on the executive board for Beyond Normal Films, on the Bloomington Human Relations Commission, and chaired several committees for Senior Professionals. He is also a longtime member of Phi Kappa Phi, Theta Alpha Phi, and the National Collegiate Players.
Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his contributions, including being nominated and chosen by The Pantagraph as Best Director several times. Receiving awards for his academic endeavors, he was named Distinguished Faculty Lecturer and won a Presidential Merit Award from WIU, followed by a DuPont Award for Teaching Excellence at Illinois Wesleyan University. He has been highlighted in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1994 and numerous editions of Who's Who in Entertainment, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.
