Dr. Kim is recognized in the health care industry as a pioneer of molecular imaging. Over the course of his career, he has made significant contributions to cancer treatment and research, molecular medicine, nuclear medicine and radiology education. He currently serves as a professor of radiological sciences at the University of California at Irvine and also holds the title of eminent scholar professor at Kyung Hee University and World Class University (WCU) Professor of molecular medicine and biopharmaceutical sciences in the Graduate School of Convergent Science and Technology at Seoul National University. He also serves as the director of nuclear medicine at the KSK Medical Group.
For 32 years, Dr. Kim served as a tenured professor at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, where he taught courses on radiology and nuclear medicine. In 2009, he took on the title of director of nuclear medicine at the center, and over the course of his career, has held a variety of administrative positions at the institute involving the imaging science programs, radiology, clinical medicine and nuclear medicine. He also served at the University of Texas Health Science Center for almost 30 years, acting as a professor of radiology and medicine. He has held a variety of other academic appointments throughout his career, including positions at University of Kentucky, where he served as an associate director of nuclear medicine and taught on radiation and diagnostic radiology. He also shared his expertise as a consultant in the field.
Dr. Kim was inspired to pursue a career in medicine at an early age. When he was ten years old, he witnessed the tragic effects of the Korean War; many people died and were being treated without any medication. He saw the importance of studying medicine through this experience. His parents, who are Christians, encouraged him to be a physician to help people. He attributes his success to his mentors, which include his parents and many American-trained professors. Professor Kwon is one of them; he is an expert in preventative medicine. Dr. Kim considers himself most fortunate to work with David Goldenberg, a world famous immunologist. They worked together for three years and developed the first radio-immuno detection and radio-immunotherapy in cancer treatment. They also published many articles together.
Dr. Kim graduated from Seoul National University with a Doctor of Medicine in 1966, and a Master of Science in 1968. He received additional medical experience as a trainee in microbiology and research for tropical diseases at the Pasteur Institute in Vietnam, and as a medical intern at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center. He completed his residency of radiology at the University of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania Hospital. He continued his education through fellowships in nuclear medicine at the University of Minnesota and at Washington University in St. Louis. He is licensed to practice medicine in Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Missouri. He also holds certifications in advanced research ethics, acute life saving, executive excellent business, and business of medicine. In addition, Dr. Kim is also recognized by the American Board of Diagnostic Radiology for special competence in nuclear radiology, and he is also a diplomate of the American Board of Nuclear Medicine and the Korean Specialty Board of Preventative Medicine. He has authored more than 350 papers published in professional journals, 15 textbooks in his field, and a number of chapters in books.
Dr. Kim was an active member of numerous organizations. He served as the former president of the Korean-American Medical Association, the Radiological Society of Greater Houston, the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association, the MRI Society of Greater Houston, the Southwestern Chapter of Alumni Association of Seoul National University, and the Southwestern Chapter of the Korean-American Medical Association. In recognition of his contribution to the field, he was also appointed president of the American College of Nuclear Medicine in 1994. Dr. Kim has been named one of the Best Doctors in America for more than 25 years. The Korean government has also awarded him with a number of medals for his professionally excellence and outstanding contributions to the health care industry. He has received dozens of other awards for his research, outstanding contributions and professional excellence, and was the recipient of multiple grants. Aside from his professional success, Dr. Kim also celebrates 45 years of marriage with his wife, Bo-Ok Yang. They have three children, Patrick, Sharon and Mathew, as well as six grandchildren. In his spare time, Dr. Kim enjoys golfing, painting water landscapes and impressionist pieces, and oil painting, as well as playing saxophone and clarinet.
