GAINESVILLE, FL, February 19, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Janet Yamamoto, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Yamamoto celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Yamamoto has served as a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida since 2001. She has served the university for more than 20 years, acting previously as an associate professor of veterinary medicine from 1993 to 2001. Dr. Yamamoto began her career in 1983 when she was recruited to serve as a researcher at the University of California, Davis. There, she performed postdoctoral work on the Feline Leukemia Virus, a cancer-causing virus similar to AIDS. She was originally recruited by the School of Medicine to produce HIV on a large scale, but continued her career at the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of California, acting as an assistant research immunologist from 1985 to 1991, until taking the position of adjunct associate professor in 1991. Over the course of her career, she also applied her expertise as a consultant to the Idexx Laboratories at Westbrook from 2010 to 2012, Fort Dodge Animal Health from 2000 to 2001, and in the Clinical Division of BioRad from 1988 to 1989. She is also civically engaged with the International House of Japan and has acted as a member of the board of directors of the Afghanistan Projects with Creating Hope International since 1996.
Dr. Yamamoto graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston with a Ph.D. in 1981, and received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Davis in 1976. She has contributed more than 85 articles to professional publications, and she holds 17 United States patents and 13 international patents in her field. She is recognized for the discovery of the feline immunodeficiency virus and its vaccine. The vaccine has been sold in the United States since 2002, and has since been sold in Japan, Australia and New Zealand. She is currently working on a second-generation vaccine that scheduled to come out within two years. In addition, Dr. Yamamoto also acts as a member of the Clinical Immunology Society, the International AIDS Society, the American Association of Immunologists, Incorporated, the American Society for Microbiology, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Phi Zeta Upsilon.
Dr. Yamamoto attributes her success to her devotion to her research. She has donated all of her patient income and a generous portion of her salary to fund her research, particularly towards her research in HIV. She does this because she is passionate about her work and has a constant desire to save human and animal life. Her HIV research depends on the blood of those who have died because of the disease, and because her research would not continue without their donation, she also wants to give back to them through the success of her research. Her goal is to develop an HIV vaccine, or at least contribute towards the development of its possible cure. She hopes to continue her work on a vaccine for HIV, and upon retiring, would like to share her knowledge and expertise with the next generation through education.
Dr. Yamamoto was recognized for her outstanding contributions with multiple awards and commendations. She was recently honored as a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and was listed into the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame. The University of Florida also commended her with the Pfizer Animal Health Award in 1996 and 2005. She was also honored as a fellow of the University of California at San Diego from 1981 to 1982, and as a fellow at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston from 1979 to 1981.
