A Chester Fritz distinguished professor emerita at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences in the department of psychiatry and behavioral science, Dr. Wilsnack's background is as a substance abuse therapist and treatment program director, as well as in research and medical education. First studying at Kansas State University, where she completed her undergraduate degree in 1965, she then studied as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Freiburg, Federal Republic of Germany. She earned an MA in 1968 and Ph.D. in 1972 in clinical psychology at Harvard University and began as a. She joined the faculty at the University of North Dakota as an associate professor of psychiatry in 1978. She also spent several years as a supervising psychologist and associate in psychology at Massachusetts Mental Health Center in Boston, MA, and as a director of the regional alcoholism rehabilitation program at South Central Community Mental Health Center in Bloomington, IN.
Dr. Wilsnack has participated in dozens of workshop presentations nationally and internationally, where she has spoken on such subjects as alcohol, sex roles and women's drinking, and alcohol abuse at various locations throughout the world. She has served on dozens of boards, including as a technical advisor of the "Harm to Others from Drinking: An International Collaborative Research Project" through the World Health Organization and Thailand Ministry of Public Health, beginning in 2011. She also recently served as a member of the behavioral genetics and epidemiology study section of the National Institutes of Health, beginning in 2008, and served as a member of the consensus panel on substance abuse in women with the Center of Substance Abuse Treatment of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, beginning in 2002.
Having written extensively on issues regarding substance abuse in women, Dr. Wilsnack authored over 200 papers, articles and book chapters, as well as a host of abstracts, and has served on numerous editorial boards throughout her career. Furthermore, she co-authored five books, including "Unhappy hours: Alcohol and Partner Aggression in the Americas" in 2008, and "El Brindis Infeliz: El Consumo de Alcohol y La Agresion Entre Parejas en las Americas" in 2010.
An elected fellow of numerous organizations, including the American Psychological Association, the Research Society on Alcoholism and the North Dakota Psychological Association, Dr. Wilsnack has been the recipient of several awards throughout her career, including an American Psychological Association Distinguished Science Contribution in Addictions Award in 2005, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Dakota Psychological Association in 1995. Notably, Dr. Wilsnack has been cited in Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who of American Women.
Dr. Wilsnack's research has been funded for more than 30 years by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism of the National Institutes of Health. During her career, she directed a 20-year longitudinal study alongside her husband, Richard W. Wilsnack, a sociologist, of drinking behavior in U.S. women, and coordinated an international collaborative research project on gender and alcohol that involved researchers from more than 40 different countries. Married to Richard since 1967, they share five adult children and six grandchildren.
