Dr. Xiang has been a professor in the School of Architecture, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 2003. With research interests including architectural acoustics, signal processing in acoustics and Bayesian inference applied in acoustics, he brings more than 30 years of technical and research experience to his current role. Prior to joining the university faculty, he was a research scientist of the National Center for Physical Acoustics at the University of Mississippi, and of the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics, Stuttgart, Germany. Prior to these positions, he was a project manager and R&D Engineer at HEAD acoustics, Herzogenrath, Germany.
In addition to his teaching experience, Dr. Xiang is a prolific writer who has contributed scientific articles to numerous professional journals and chapters in textbooks. Books he has recently edited include the "Architectural Acoustics handbook" and "Acoustics, Communication and Information - Memorial Volume in Honor of Manfred R. Schroeder." Dr. Xiang is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, and of the Institute of Acoustics, UK, a member of the Audio Engineering Society, the German Acoustical Society, and the Institute of Noise Control Engineering, USA, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. He received the Wallace Clement Sabine Award in 2014 for his contributions to the field of architectural acoustics. Dr. Xiang holds a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Tianjin University, China, and a MS and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Ruhr University, Germany.
