Mr. Siffert, of Lankler, Siffert & Wohl, LLC, has been a founding partner at his firm for more than 35 years. A leading law firm in New York City that focuses on litigation and represents businesses and individuals throughout the world in matters of complex commercial litigation, white-collar criminal matters, and regulatory proceedings, he is one of nine partners and nearly a dozen other attorneys and of counsels. Mr. Siffert is a former assistant United States attorney in the Southern District of New York, and law clerk to the Honorable Murray I. Gurffein, United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York.
Known for his expertise in litigation, Mr. Siffert's area of practice include commercial, contract, and other civil disputes, as well as regulatory and criminal matters involving a wide range of allegations, including securities fraud, antitrust violations, professional misconduct, and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations. His clients have included corporations, boards of corporations, individual directors, and senior officers. Mr. Siffert has tried many civil and criminal trials to verdict, has succeeded as claimant and respondent in commercial disputes before arbitration panels, and has argued appeals before the Second Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, the New York Court of Appeals, and the New York State Supreme Court's appellate division, and first and second departments.
Born in New York City, Mr. Siffert first earned a BA at Amherst College in 1969, followed by a JD at Columbia University in 1972, and was admitted to practice in New York. He also is admitted to practice in the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
In 2012, Mr. Siffert was appointed by Chief Justice John Roberts to the Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Criminal Rules. Mr. Siffert currently serves on the committee on admissions and grievances for the Second Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, as vice chair of projects and initiatives and as member of the board of directors for the Historical Society of the New York Courts, and is on the attorney panel of the committee on grievances for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He is a mediator on the mediation panel for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, and an arbitrator for AAA Arbitration Panel. He is also a member of the executive committee and board of directors of the PLI Practicing Law Institute.
In addition to his work in the field, Mr. Siffert has long been an educator. He is as adjunct professor in the school of law at New York University since 1979, and has served as a faculty member for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy Training, and has been invited to teach classes at Harvard Law School, Hofstra Law School, Cardozo Law School, and Columbia Business School. Mr. Siffert has also appeared as a faculty presenter on numerous Practicing Law Institute programs involving white collar crime, trial strategy, and trial advocacy. Mr. Siffert is the co-author of three books, numerous chapters to books, as well as articles to peer-reviewed journals such as the New York Law Journal. His books include: "Modern Federal Jury Instructions-Criminal"; "Modern Federal Jury Instructions-Civil"; and "Business Crime; Criminal Liability of the Business Community."
Mr. Siffert is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and served as Regent. He is currently a foundation trustee since 2013, Mr. Siffert is also a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and longtime member of several other legal organizations. Named to Top 100 Criminal Defense Lawyers by the American Society of Legal Advocates and the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by The National Trial Lawyers many times, he was a recipient of the Health and Healing Award from the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth in 2014, and a Second Circuit Professionalism Award from the American Institute of Law, Inc., in 2009.
