With more than 45 years of professional experience to his credit, Mr. Schultz currently works Of Counsel with the Grants Pass Office at Watkinson, Laird, Rubenstein, P.C., a prominent statewide Oregon law firm Prior to this appointment, he held the position of lawyer at his private practice from 1986 to 2015, University Attorney with Arizona State University from 1983 to 1986, legal counsel with Josephine County, OR, from 1974 to 1983, associate with Wade, Nelson & Anderson, P.C., from 1972 to 1974, Senior Staff Attorney with the Maricopa Legal Aid Society from 1971 to 1972, and began his career as an associate with Hunter, Bartlett, Penn and Lerch, Phoenix, AZ.
Before embarking on his professional path, Mr. Schultz earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cornell College in 1967. He concluded his studies at Arizona State University, graduating with a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree in 1970. Since 1970, Mr. Schultz has been admitted to practice by the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Arizona, the Oregon State Bar, the U.S. District Court of Oregon, and the Josephine County Bar Association.
Beyond his efforts within the field, Mr. Schultz has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. A statewide arbitrator for the Arbitration Services of Portland since 2009, he has been an arbitrator and mediator for the Josephine County Circuit Court of the State of Oregon since 1986, an arbitrator and mediator for the Josephine County Circuit Court since 1988, an arbitrator for local attorney fee disputes with the Oregon State Bar since 1998, and a land use hearings officer for the City of Grants Pass from 1996 to 2005, and 2008 to present. Having served as the chief panelist for the local panel of the Oregon State Bar Disciplinary Board in 2011, Mr. Schultz has also held the roles of Judge Pro Tempore for the Circuit Court of the State of Oregon from 1993 to 2008, a judge for High School Senior Graduation Projects from 1990 to 2000, a hearings officer for Josephine County from 1992 to 1996, an instructor at the People's Law School for Rogue Community College from 1991 to 1993, and on the board of directors for the Southern Oregon State College Athletic Association from 1988 to 1991.
Mr. Schultz has additionally served as the president of the Grants Pass High School Athletics Booster Club from 1989 to 1990, part-time interim county counsel and land use attorney for Jackson County in 1989, moderator for the Community Symposium on Medical Waste Disposal in 1989, class agent for the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University from 1984 to 1986, and speaker and panelist on various community issues. In the years prior, he served as special bar counsel on Attorney Disciplinary Matters in 1983, program chairman for the annual state County Legal Counsels' convention from 1979 to 1981, speaker at the Regional Conference on Oregon Agricultural Land Tax Incentives in 1978, an evening instructor in Paralegal, Business, and Real Estate Law at Rogue Community College from 1974 to 1978, and intramural athletics director for Arizona State University Law School. Mr. Schultz's earliest civic positions include evening instructor in real estate and business law at Mesa Community College from 1973 to 1974, and as a Senior Services volunteer lawyer from 1975 to 1978 in Grants Pass.
In addition to his primary profession, Mr. Schultz remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. A member of the Section on Real Estate, Land Use and Business Law of the Oregon State Bar since 1988, the Honor Code Drafting Committee at Arizona State University Law School, and Southern Oregon Horse Racing Association. He was appointed to the Regional Disciplinary Board of the Oregon State Bar from 2011 to 2014, he was a member of the Local Committee on Attorney Ethics and Professional Responsibility with the Oregon State Bar from 1997 to 2000, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America from 1985 to 1990, the National Association of College and University Attorneys Committee from 1984 to 1985, and Rotary International from 1980 to 1983. Formerly the president of the Oregon County Legal Counsels' Association from 1979 to 1981, he was associated as a government executive committee liaison with the Oregon State Bar in 1980, a committee member of the National Institute of Municipal Law Officers from 1979 to 1982, on the board of directors and executive committee of the Oregon District Attorneys Association from 1980 to 1981, president of the Grants Pass Aquatic Club in 1977-1979, and president of the Grants Pass Kiwanis Club in 1979. Mr. Schultz has had several legislative responsibilities as well, having been on the Bankruptcy Chapters Update Committee for "Williston on Contracts" in 1972, the Oregon Legislative Revision Subcommittee for the Writ of Review Statutes in 1978, and the Oregon State Committee on Revision of Uniform County Statutes in 1979.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Mr. Schultz has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. Rated BV by Martindale-Hubbell since 1981, from which he received a Commemorative Honor in 2016, he has been honored among the Top Lawyers in Oregon for Highest in Ethical Standards and Professional Excellence by the Legal Network in 2013, as well as being recognized with others as a local Favorite Attorney in 1995 and forward. Earning a Special Mention by the All-Century Football Team at Cornell College in 1991, he was also named to the First Team All-Conference Football team in 1974. He ranked high in his class and set a School Track Record at Marion Iowa High School.
