Dr. Tannenbaum is renowned for his research in relativistic heavy ion physics and elementary particle physics, from muons to gluons.

UPTON, NY, February 27, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Michael Tannenbaum, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Tannenbaum celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Tannenbaum is renowned for his research in relativistic heavy ion physics and elementary particle physics, from muons to gluons. For more than 35 years, he has served at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY. Since 1987, he has held the title of senior physicist and previously served as group leader and deputy group leader of the BNL/PHENIX Group from 2001 to 2008, and from 1998 to 2001, respectively. He began his career at the institute by being recruited in 1980 to "help save the Isabelle collider'' as head of Planning and Analysis in the Magnet division until 1981 and then as head of Superconductor Procurement and Magnet Lamination Physics until May 1982 when he joined the physics department as a physicist, serving in the position for five years. Dr. Tannenbaum has also served in academia as an associate professor at Rockefeller University from 1971 to 1980, Harvard University from 1969 to 1971, and as assistant professor at Harvard University from 1966 to 1969. He began his career at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, in Switzerland, as a visiting Scientist in 1975 to 1966 and then in 1973 as an Attache Scientifique serving in the position until 1984. In 1991, he returned to CERN on sabbatical as a visiting professor.

Dr. Tannenbaum has applied his expertise in the field in a variety of additional capacities. He served PHENIX on the Spokesperson Nominating Committee in 1997, 2006, and 2012, and as a member of the executive council of PHENIX from 1994 to 2003. He also served Brookhaven National Laboratory as chair of the Distinguished Lectureship Committee from 1993 to 1995. In addition, Dr. Tannenbaum acted as a reviewer with the German Excellence Initiative, DFG in 2006, as a member of the Scientific Council of the Laboratory Leprince-Ringuet, Ecole Polytechnique in France from 2002 to 2005, and as a member of the Program Advisory Committee at Fermilab, Batavia in Illinois from 1972 to 1975.

Dr. Tannenbaum attended the Bronx High School of Science and began his academic career at Columbia University. He graduated from Columbia with a PhD in 1965, a Master of Arts in physics, and a Bachelor of Arts in physics, magna cum laude. Both institutions have produced Nobel prize-winning scientists, and attending these schools provided Dr. Tannenbaum with the opportunity to learn from the leading scientists and instructors in his area of study. He attributes his academic success to the influence of these individuals and to the fact that the company of these outstanding professionals seemed almost commonplace during his education. Two of Dr. Tannenbaum's own teachers had won Nobel Prizes during his undergraduate career: his physics professors, Polykarp Kusch, and TsungDao Lee. Kusch's work focused on quantum electrodynamics, and the experiments were performed at Columbia in Pupin Laboratories, close to the classrooms where he attended college and graduate school.

Dr. Tannenbaum has contributed numerous articles to professional journals and chapters in books. He is proud to have discovered that quarks and gluons were suppressed in collisions of high energy nuclei at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The discovery gave rise to a range of questions within the field. Dr. Tannenbaum is also celebrated as a founding member/convener of PHENIX, electron and hard-scattering physics, and the RHIC Spin Collaboration. The working groups he has participated in have also led to important discoveries in light and heavy quark quenching. Some of his other outstanding professional contributions included his origination and leadership of the MuonTridents-first measurement of the statistics of the muon in 1971, as well as discoveries in hard-scattering of quarks and gluons at CERN ISR from1973 to 1984, and his research in ET distributions. Another notable achievement is his contribution as co-author of "High pT Physics in the Heavy Ion Era," published by Cambridge in 2013.

Dr. Tannenbaum is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Sigma Xi and The Phi Beta Kappa Society. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to his field, he was honored as a fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation from 1967 to 1969, the National Science Foundation from 1959 to 1963, and as an Ernest Kempton Adams Fellow in 1965. His success is not limited to his career; he also celebrates more than 44 years of marriage with Barbara C. Moshinsky. They have two children, Nina Fay and Lisa Marie. In his spare time, Dr. Tannenbaum enjoys travelling and appreciating gourmet food.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Tannenbaum has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
