ANN ARBOR, MI, February 28, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Tetsufumi Ueda, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Ueda celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Professor emeritus in the Department of Pharmacology at University of Michigan (UM), Dr. Ueda began teaching at the university in 1978. His areas of interest have included synaptic vesicular glutamate storage and release, specifically mechanism and regulation, with his laboratory, at the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute, focused on research on the presynaptic aspect of glutamate transmission. In particular, Dr. Ueda made an important discovery in the early 1980's of the energy-dependent, highly glutamate-specific transport system in the synaptic vesicle. This demonstration provided key evidence for supporting the concept that glutamate can serve as a major neurotransmitter in the brain. Such a common amino acid was not accepted to serve as a neurotransmitter then, in particular for the lack of this evidence. Thus, this contributed to the transformation of our understanding of the manner in which neural communication occurs in the central nervous system.
Dr. Ueda has made several significant discoveries in his field, including the discovery, purification and characterization of Synapsin I and NADH-rubredoxin reductase. The results of his research have been documented by authoring and co-authoring numerous peer-reviewed articles in such publications as the Journal of Neurochemistry, the Journal of Pharmacology and The Journal of Biological Chemistry. A former grant reviewer for many years for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), the Advanced Study Institute, NATO, in Brussels, Belgium, and the Medical Research Council in London, England, he has also been the recipient of several grants during the course of his career from such organizations as the NIH, the NSF, the American Diabetes Association, and the Taisho Pharmaceutical Company, Ltd., in Tokyo.
Formerly serving as a member of the subcommittee I for the neurological sciences study section of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Ueda is a longtime member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Society for Neuroscience, the International Society for Neurochemistry, the American Society for Neurochemistry, and the American Chemical Society.
Earning a BS in chemistry at Kyoto University in Japan in 1966, and PhD with Professor Minor J. Coon in biological chemistry at UM in 1971, Dr. Ueda then spent then six and a half years in the Department of Pharmacology at Yale University, first as a postdoctoral associate from 1971 to 1974, then as a National Institute of Mental Health postdoctoral fellow from 1974 to 1976, and finally as a research associate from 1976 to 1978, all with Professor Paul Greengard. He has been included in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Tetsufumi Ueda, PhD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
