Recognized as the first physician to perform open-heart surgery at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ, as part of Atlantic Health System 27 years ago in 1988, Dr. Parr is a board-certified thoracic surgeon who has long been affiliated with the Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute. Earning the title of physician-in-chief in 2007, Dr. Parr did two open-heart surgeries that day, both of which were coronary bypass procedures that had excellent results. Instrumental in building the Gagnon Heart Hospital as a major fundraiser, his program has since become the largest in the state of New Jersey thus far, with the unique ability to produce significantly better results in coronary bypass, aortic valve replacement, and aortic valve replacement with coronary bypass by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Listed as one of the top hospitals in the United States for cardiac surgery, Dr. Parr also serves as medical director of cardiac services since 2004, and member the board of trustees for the non-profit healthcare system chairman of cardiovascular surgery since 1998.
Dr. Parr completed his undergraduate work at Wesleyan University in 1965, followed by an MD at Cornell University in 1969. He then spent two years as both an intern and resident at the University Hospitals of Cleveland before doing residency work in surgery, serving as chief resident in surgery, and doing additionally residency work in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the University of Alabama Hospitals between 1971 and 1977. He then taught as an assistant professor of cardiothoracic surgery at M.S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA, as an assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University, and as a clinical associate professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Parr then began practicing medicine at the Presbyterian-University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA, for nearly a decade, working his way up to chief of cardiovascular surgery. Once Dr. Parr relocated to northern New Jersey to begin practicing at Morristown Memorial Hospital, he eventually taught at Columbia University as an associate professor of clinical surgery in 1992, where he later concluded his career in academia after 18 years of service in 2010.
Contributor of articles to professional journals, as well as chapters to books in his area of expertise, Dr. Parr currently serves as a trustee for the Land Conservancy of New Jersey since 2014. He formerly served as a board member of the Morristown Health Foundation between 2008 and 2014, and was vice chair of the Morris Township Parks and Recreation Foundation from 2005 to 2012.
An elected fellow of the American College Cardiology, the American College of Surgeons, the American College Chest Physicians, the Philadelphia College Physicians and the Royal Society Medicine, Dr. Parr has also been a member of several other professional organizations throughout his career. He is also active with the Morris County Golf Club, the New York University Club and the Beaverkill Trout Club, where he twice served as president, in his down time.
Married to his wife Helen Mushat Frye since 1967 with two daughters, Kathleen Gage and Helen Johnston, Dr. Parr also now has two grandchildren. Notably, his daughter Kathleen is also doctor. Dr. Parr has been included in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as numerous editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
