With nearly 60 years of experience, Dr. Whitehead has been recognized in retirement as an honorary research fellow with the University of Brighton since 2005, having been a principal lecturer from 1993 to 2004. Prior to obtaining these roles, she worked as a principal lecturer at Bedford College of Higher Education from 1972 to 1993. Earlier in her career, she was a physical education teacher from 1958 to 1966, and a physical education lecturer with the University of Manchester from 1966 to 1970.
Dr. Whitehead obtained a Teachers' Certificate from Dartford College of Physical Education in 1958, at which time she was an international long jumper representing England and Great Britain. After teaching in the UK and Australia she studied at the University of Manchester, obtaining a Diploma in the Advanced Study of Education in 1968 and a Master of Education in 1970. She then traveled to the United States to earn a PhD from the University of Oregon in 1972, serving as a graduate teaching assistant with the school from 1970 to 1972. Back in the UK she served as a member of the Council for National Academy Awards physical education panel from 1977 to 1982.
A respected voice in the field, Dr. Whitehead is known for her outstanding and innovative research on motor learning and on achievement goals and their relationships with perceived ability, values, attitudes, enjoyment, and persistence. She has worked on the development and international validation of psychometric tests to assess achievement orientations, values and attitudes in youth sport, and has co-edited a book on Values in Youth Sport and Physical Education, published in the UK, US and Turkey. She has presented research papers and led symposia at world congresses as recently as 2017.
Dr. Whitehead is an Honoured Member of the Association for Physical Education and a Fellow of the British Association of Sports and Exercise Sciences. She is an occasional contributor to Christian Science periodicals and meetings. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to her industry, she was listed in multiple editions of Who's Who in the World. In her spare time, Dr. Whitehead enjoys writing, photography, sports, science, and spirituality.
