ST. LOUIS, MO, March 02, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Rev. John Jay Hughes with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Fr. Hughes celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A sixth-generation direct descendant of American Founding Father and first Chief Justice, John Jay, and son and grandson of Anglican priests, Fr. Hughes attributes his success to his faith that "with God all things are possible." He has wanted to be a priest since he was 12 years old. He prepared for his career by obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College, a Master of Theology from New York's General Theological Seminary, and finally, a Doctor of Theology cum laude from the University of Münster in Germany. In 1954 he was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church, which he served happily for six years. At Easter 1960 he was received into the Catholic Church ("The most difficult decision I have ever made, but also the best"). Following teaching in Germany and work for the doctorate, the Catholic Church in 1968 granted him the rare privilege of conditional ordination to its priesthood, which allows the possibility that his previous Anglican ordination might have been valid.
After his return to the United States in 1980, Hughes taught Church History at St. Louis University for over four years before entering the service of the St. Louis Archdiocese as Theological Consultant, Vice Chancellor, and Parish Pastor. While at St. Louis University, he received a research grant from the American Philosophical Society. He has published well over a hundred articles and book reviews in scholarly journals, magazines, and newspapers in the U.S. and overseas. He has touched many lives through counseling and spiritual direction. Several men whom he guided are now priests, or in seminary; a young woman is now a Religious Sister.
Fr. Hughes retired in 2016. During his active years he enjoyed ocean sailing, scuba diving -- and singing, starting as a 9-year-old choirboy at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. He is a member of the American Catholic Historical Society and the Harvard Club of St Louis.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Rev. John Jay Hughes, Dr. theol., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
