Serving in this capacity since 1996, he formerly served as surgeon-in-chief at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis from 1988 to 1996, and as cardiovascular surgeon-in-chief from 1984 to 1996.
Beginning his career in academia at the School of Medicine at Washington University of 1961, Dr. Kouchoukos later became the John M. Shoenberg professor of cardiovascular surgery between 1984 and 1996, and served as the vice chairman of the department surgery from 1991 to 1996. He also spent years at the University of Alabama in various capacities between 1967 and 1984, including as the John W. Kirklin professor of cardiovascular surgery.
Dr. Kouchoukos received his medical degree, cum laude, from Washington University in St. Louis. He then completed his general surgery residency at Barnes Hospital and cardiothoracic surgical residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He is board certified in cardiovascular surgery. Over the years, Dr. Kouchukos has served on numerous committees and has been actively serving on the circulatory system devices panel for the Food & Drug Administration for the past five years. He has served on various editorial boards, has authored and co-authored numerous articles in peer reviewed journals, and in 2012, released the fourth edition of the "Kirklin/Barratt-Boyes Cardiac Surgery" textbook with several other authors. The textbook includes the latest advances and practices related to cardiac surgery, including the endovascular management of thoracic aorta disease, new data on clinical outcomes, the most recent minimally invasive procedures, non-invasive CT angiography and new alternative surgical approaches to mitral valve surgery.
An elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology, where Dr. Kouchoukos was assistant treasurer, secretary, and a Young Investigators Award finalist in 1962, he remains active as a member of numerous other professional organizations, including the American Association of University Professors, the American Medical Association and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, where he spent seven years on the board of directors.
Recently, Dr. Kouchoukos was a recipient of a Bakoulev Prize from the Russian Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons in 2017. He was also honored with the Antoine Marfan Award in 2012 in recognition of his global leadership in cardiovascular surgery and his lifetime accomplishments in pioneering surgical technique to improve aortic and valve surgery for patients with Marfan syndrome. Notably, Dr. Kouchoukos has played a critical role in a multicenter surgical study of operations on the aortic root in patients with Marfan syndrome, sponsored by the National Marfan Foundation and Baylor College of Medicine. Married since 1966 to his wife Judith Buell with three sons, Dr. Kouchoukos has been highlighted in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the Midwest since 1987.
