After teaching for more than 40 years, Dr. Leone went back to school to earn a Doctorate of Arts in English at St. John's University in Queens, NY, in 2006. A longtime teacher at Rockland Community College in Suffern, NY, since 1993, he has also been teaching at Westchester Community College, State University of New York, in Valhalla, NY, since 1989, where he has also been a program administrator for the past 16 years, currently co-chairs the PAL-TECH National Science Foundation grant, and is the acting curriculum chair for networking. Dr. Leone teaches in the department of computer science and the school of mathematics, science, and engineering.
Dr. Leone first earned a BA in English and education at LaSalle University in Philadelphia in 1975, followed by an MA in English at Villanova University. He began his teaching career at Bishop Egan High School, a Catholic school in Fairless Hills, PA, in 1975, followed by another three years at Sewanhaka High School in Elmont, NY, and three years at Farmingdale High School in Farmingdale, NY. Dr. Leone was known for his participation in various extracurricular activities such as the drama club and the school magazine while teaching at the high school level.
A longtime member of the Modern Language Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, the Conference on College Composition, the Alliance of Computers and Writing, and the LaSalle Education Alumni Association, Dr. Leone has been involved in numerous capacities within his local community as well. He was a founding member of the Rockland County YMCA Youth Services from 1985 to 1988, chairman of the YMCA board of managers from 1986 to 1988, chair of the Mazeppa Planning Committee for several years, and secretary and president of the Mazeppa Engine Company #2 for a total of 15 years between 1982 and 1997. He was named an American Legion Good Citizen by the town of Nyack for his efforts.
For nearly 25 years, Dr. Leone has been simultaneously working as a computer consultant for the Nyack Fire Department and, for the past 16 years, has been the English curriculum coordinator for the Verizon Next Step Program. In 2002, he was the recipient of an Outstanding Programs in English Award by the National Council of Teachers of English. He also received a Star Award from Verizon Next Step Program in 2006, and a Recognition Award from Cisco Networking Academy in 2008. Married to Dee Ann Hammond since 1989 with two children, Dr. Leone has been named to Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
