A widely regarded professor of psychiatry, Dr. Angrist served as a member of the faculty at the NYU School of Medicine for more than three decades. He has been recognized for research on both the effects of central nervous stimulant drugs and biologic substrates of psychotic disorders. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Angrist contributed numerous articles to professional journals and book chapters, and has been a grantee of the National Institute of Mental Health and the US Department of Veterans Affairs.
He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at Colby College in 1958 and an M.D. at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1962. After internship and a psychiatric residency, he pursued a postdoctoral fellowship in psychopharmacology at NYU/Bellevue Hospital under the mentorship of Dr. Sam Gershon (1966-1968).
Since 1973, Dr. Angrist has been a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has been a member of several research organizations, including the Society for Psychiatric Research and the Society of Biological Psychiatry. He remains a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) and the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP).
As a clinician, Dr. Angrist served as a staff psychiatrist at Bellevue Hospital Center (1969-1980) and The New York Harbor Health Care System in the US Department of Veterans Affairs (1980-1998). He joined the faculty of the NYU School of Medicine in 1969 and was promoted to the rank of professor in 1980.
He enjoyed rock climbing, hiking, canoe camping and SCUBA. He is a proud member of the infamous Vulgarian Mountain Club.
