Longtime professor of history, Dr. Cooper is a 1962 Princeton University graduate who later earned a PhD at Johns Hopkins University in 1966. He spent nearly half a century teaching at Louisiana State University (LSU), beginning as an assistant professor of history in 1968, and retiring as a Boyd professor emeritus in 2014. His 46-year career was concluded with a gala event in May 2014 where he was honored with a framed historical document, a presidential order bearing the signature of President John Quincy Adams, who was the subject of Dr. Cooper's most recent research on campus. His many years of service at LSU also included serving as dean of the graduate school between 1982 and 1989.
During his tenure at LSU, Dr. Cooper spent one semester as a Douglass Southall Freeman professor at the University of Richmond in 2000. Having written extensively throughout his career as well, he recently published "The Lost Founding Father: John Quincy Adams and the Transformation of American Politics" in 2017, was editor and co-editor for several publications, such as "The Jefferson Davis: The Essential Writings" in 2003, and authored and co-authored many articles in peer-reviewed journals and other publications.
Dr. Cooper received a Prize for Biography from the L.A. Times in 2001, was twice recognized with a Jefferson Davis Award from the Museum of Confederacy in 2000 and 2012, and was named a Distinguished Research Master at LSU in 1980.
Early in his career, Dr. Cooper was a senior fellow at the Institute of Southern History at Johns Hopkins University, research fellow at the Charles Warren Center Studies in American History at Harvard University, Guggenheim fellow, and National Endowment of the Humanities fellow, between 1971 and 1989. He previously served in the U.S. Army for two years, from 1966 to 1968, reaching the rank of captain. Dr. Cooper remains active as a member of the Society of American Historians, the American Historical Association, and the Organization of American Historians, and member and former president of the Southern Historical Association in 2010. Married to Patricia Holmes since 1962 with two sons, Dr. Cooper has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as numerous editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
