A professor emeritus of finance and insurance at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Babbel has been a senior advisor in the Finance Group and leader of the Insurance Economics Practice at Charles River Associates for the past 11 years. In addition to his tenure in academia and experience in the field of finance, he has also spent time consulting for some of the largest financial institutions in the world, including Goldman Sachs and Company, various large insurers and banks both in the United States and abroad, as well as government agencies that have included the U.S. Department of Treasury and the United Nations. He has also served as an expert witness in high profile cases on several occasions. Honored by being named to the Critical Review of the U.S. Actuarial Profession Advisory Panel in 2005 and 2006, he was also the recipient of a William G. Whitney Award for Distinguished Undergraduate teaching in 2003.
Prior to joining Charles River Associates as a senior advisor, he was a senior financial economist in the Financial Sector Development Department of the World Bank and a vice president in the Financial Strategies Group, Fixed Income Division and leader of the Insurance Services Group in the Pension and Insurance Department of Goldman Sachs.
Prior to his tenure as a professor at The Wharton School from 1985 to 2014, Dr. Babbel served as an assistant professor of finance and insurance and as an assistant professor of international finance at the Haas School of Business at the University of California (UC) at Berkeley from 1978 to 1985. During his 38-year career as an educator, he has taught courses in finance, investments, fixed income, insurance, and international finance at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and executive level.
An expert in the fields of finance, investments, risk management, insurance, and international finance, Dr. Babbel's specialties within these fields include fixed income securities, asset/liability management, valuation, life insurance, pensions, and annuities. He has authored more than 130 scholarly articles, books and monographs on investment and insurance topics, several of which won national and international awards of distinction. He has been invited to speak before numerous conferences, conventions, and seminars in the United States and abroad, and has lectured on five different continents throughout his career. Furthermore, Dr. Babbel has appeared on many television and radio programs and has been cited in magazines and the popular press for his work. More recently, he has focused his research and writings on retirement funding.
Dr. Babbel earned a BA in economics and philosophy at Brigham Young University and George Mason University, an MBA in finance and international finance at the University of Florida, a PhD Certificate in Latin American studies and another in tropical agriculture, and a PhD in finance at the University of Florida. He also completed postdoctoral studies in financial theory at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, and a postdoctoral fellowship in risk and insurance at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Married for more than 40 years to his wife Mary Jane Benson with four children and 13 grandchildren, Dr. Babbel has been highlighted in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1992, as well as several editions of Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
