The president and medical director of the Medical Illness Counseling Center in Chevy Chase, MD, and a clinical professor of psychiatry, behavioral sciences, and pediatrics at the George Washington University Medical Center, Dr. Hersh has contributed over more than five decades to advancing the integration of psychiatry into medical care and research. Some of his greatest achievements include facilitating the expansion of research in mitochondrial disorders, facilitating the development of the pain curriculum at the New York University School of Medicine, creating an outpatient facility for specialized services for persons with medical illnesses and disabilities, innovating improved health care quality management, advocating for "enhanced collaboration" in clinical medical research as Medical Advisor to the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation, 2012 to present. He is also proud to have authored "Beyond Miracles" in 2000, "The Physician and the Mental Health of the Child" in 1981, and "The Executive Parent" in 1979. Dr. Hersh is a published author in medical oncology and pediatric surgery textbooks of the first chapters in such textbooks devoted to psychological implications and issues of cancer and of surgery. Additionally, he authored and co-authored over 64 publications, including 2 books, and was named contributor to 6 major national reports. He was also the contributing editor of Journeys from 1994 to 1996.
He also served in the USPHS as the creator and director of the "Most in Need" program which became the "services for severely disturbed children" section of the Mental Health Act of 1980. Dr. Hersh also served as the first Assistant Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) for Children and Youth Programs in 1975 (when the NIMH also encompassed the alcohol and drug programs) and reported directly to the NIMH Director and the National Advisory Mental Health Council. He was the developer and leader of psychosocial training seminars for clinical associates in the Pediatric Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute, and was project director and co-principle investigator of a series of research and development contracts entitled "Neuropsychological Studies of Children and Youth with HIV" funded by the National Cancer Institute from 1988 through 2011.
At the beginning of his career, Dr. Hersh served as a pediatric intern and fellow in child psychiatry at NYU-Bellevue Medical Center and a resident in psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. He proceeded to become the chief of the Center for Studies in Child and Family Mental Health, the special assistant to the director, the assistant director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and the director of the division of children and youth at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. From 1982 to 1994, Dr. Hersh was the co-founder, co-director, and chairman of the board of the Medical Illness Counseling Center, and from 1996 to 1999, was a behavioral health and medicine consultant for Marriott International.
When Dr. Hersh wasn't working, he was giving back to his community. He was on the services committee of the American Cancer Society, the committee on traffic of the Somerset Town Council, the board of directors of the Barker Adoption Foundation, and the medical board of the Lupus Foundation of Greater Washington, a lecturer for Y-Me. Additionally, he was on the board of medical advisors of Multimedia Medical Systems, a volunteer emergency response physician for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the chairman of the science advisory board for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the director of a research grant from the J.Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation.
Dr. Hersh prepared for his endeavors by earning a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College in 1962, an MD from New York University in 1967, and a diploma from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He also joined prominent professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association (he was elected to "Distinguished Life Fellow" status), and the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). His SPHersh/MICC Educational Fund helped to establish the IASP's John D. Loesser Distinguished Lecture Award.
He served as a Commissioned Corps Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service (reserve status 1968-1972) and on active duty from July 1972 to September 1981. His final rank was Director Grade (06), the equivalent to U.S. Navy Captain. He is married and has 4 adult children and 7 grandchildren.
As a testament to his accomplishments, Dr. Hersh was nominated as one of the top doctors in Greater Washington in 2008, and was honored with the Alumni Leadership Award from the New York University School of Medicine in 2005, Special Commendation from St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, the 1993 Significant Achievement Award from the American Psychiatric Association and the Special Award from the National Consortium for Child Mental Health Services in 1979. His success was highlighted in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the World, as well as one edition each of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the East.
