Working primarily with polymer manufacturing and compounding corporations, his areas of expertise lie in standardization and quality and standards. He formerly served first as product development manager and then as manager of quality assurance for Honeywell in New Jersey from 1974 to 1993, senior research chemist for ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company in New Jersey from 1965 to 1974, and senior research chemist for the United States Rubber Company in Connecticut from 1955 to 1965.
A longtime chairman of the D20 subcommittee on thermoplastics for the American Society for Testing and Materials between 1984 and 2007, he was awarded the Award of Merit and elected fellow of the Society. Committee D20 on Plastics honored him with an award in 2013 for thirty-four years of Outstanding Achievements. After 30 years, still Chairman of the ISO committee for Thermoplastics and first recipient of its Award for Outstanding Service. Dr. MacFarlane is also a member of The Society of Rheology, the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Chemical Society, the Society of the Sigma Xi, and the Society of Plastic Engineers. He was President for three years of the Newark Section of SPE and also has been director of the Palisades-New Jersey section of the Society of Plastics Engineers.
Becoming involved in his industry due to an early interest in science and mathematics, Dr. MacFarlane completed his undergraduate studies cum laude with honors in chemistry at Brown University in 1952 and Ph.D. at the prestigious Yale University. Formerly married to Janet Ellen Burke with five children and five grandchildren, he has been highlighted in the 17th edition of Who's Who in the World for his work.
