With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Tanner has been recognized as Dean and Provost Emeritus of William Jewell College since 2003. Prior to his retirement, he worked with the school as a professor from 1997 to 2003, having been dean from 1980 to 1997, and serving as an interim president from 1993 to 1994. Before joining William Jewell College, he worked as the vice president of academic affairs at Louisiana College from 1978 to 1980, having held the same position with Hardin-Simmons University from 1972 to 1978. Earlier in his career, he worked as a professor of English with Oklahoma Baptist University from 1958 to 1972, and as an associate professor with Franklin College from 1964 to 1965. In addition, he is a former member of the board of directors of the Missouri Council for Humanities.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1955. He then studied at the University of Oklahoma, completing a Master of Arts in 1957, later earning a PhD in English in 1964. He was named a fellow of the Southern Fellowships Fund, and he has been recognized as a Danforth Fellow. He also served in the United States Army Reserve from 1957 to 1969, receiving an honorable discharge as a captain.
A respected voice in the field, Dr. Tanner is known for his focus on writing, Greek literature and history. However, he takes the greatest pride in teaching an exclusive class that would prepare students to attend either the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge during their junior year. This class, which focused mainly on English and writing, was designed for students who were considered at the top of their class.
Throughout his career, Dr. Tanner has been recognized for his contributions. He was a contributing author with numerous publications, including the first and second volumes of "The Annotated Bibliography of D. H. Lawrence." He has also been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World. Since his retirement in 2003, Dr. Tanner has maintained involvement with the Sons of the American Revolution.
