Dr. Rahman is an accomplished neuropharmacologist, neuroscientist, consultant, and professor in the College of Pharmacy at South Dakota State University. After becoming full professor in 2014, he currently teaches nine courses, including Pharmacology I and II, Drugs of Abuse and Addiction, Advanced Concepts in Pharmacology, Topics in Advanced Pharmacology, and Techniques in Pharmaceutical Sciences. He formerly spent six years at the same university as an assistant turned associate professor, conducting research and teaching for four years in the department of psychiatry and neuroscience at the University of Toronto, Canada, and about a decade teaching at Jahangirnagar University in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He also worked in the field for several years, including as senior research scientist in the Center of Drug Abuse Research Translation at the University of Kentucky and as a scientist at the Center of Addiction and Mental Health. Dr. Rahman became an Academic Leadership Fellow through American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy in 2016 and certified site evaluator through the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education in 2017.
First studying in his home country of Bangladesh, Dr. Rahman earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in pharmacology with highest distinction at Dhaka University in 1985 and 1987, respectively, followed by a Ph.D. in neuropharmacology at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1995 in Canada. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychopharmacology at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN. Dr. Rahman has since studied the medication development for drug addiction and central nervous system disorders, has done drug discovery for neuropsychiatric disorders and for neuroinflammatory and neuropathic pain, as well as mental illness and substance abuse research for public health. He has authored close to 300 publications, including book chapters, reviews, journal articles and meeting proceedings/abstracts in peer reviewed journals relating to his field of study in such publications as the European Journal of Pharmacology, British Journal of Pharmacology, CNS & Neurological Disorders-Drug Targets, the Drug Discoveries and Therapeutics, and the Journal of Cerebral Flow and Metabolism, and was the author and editor of 4 books, including "Brain as a Drug Target and Molecular Basis of Drug Addiction/Progress in Molecular Biology and Translational Science," published in 2011 and 2016, respectively through Elsevier Inc. of the Academic Press in London, England.
Affiliated as a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and the International Brain Research Organization, Dr. Rahman is also an honorary member of the Novel Global Educational Foundation. Furthermore, he currently serves as the secretary/treasurer in the division of pharmacology education for the American Society for Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
Recently accepting a Distinguished Service Award from the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics in the division of pharmacology education in 2017, Dr. Rahman also received many grants throughout his tenure from such organizations as the National Institutes of Health, Fulbright Foundation USA and the Center for Drug Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, as well as numerous non-profit organizations. Highlighted in dozens of editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Dr. Rahman is married to Moursheda Rahman and has two children. Enjoying reading, writing, and traveling in his free time, he has been known for his recent local involvement with such organizations as the Brookings Human Rights Commission in South Dakota, the Brookings Interfaith Council, Oxfam International, Amnesty International, and the American Civil Liberties Association.
