Employed for close to 34 years at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Dr. Meireles began her journey in higher education immediately following the completion of her PhD in Chemical Engineering at Iowa State University. Beginning as an assistant professor in the School of Food Engineering in 1983, she has since become a full professor. During her tenure, Dr. Meireles has supervised 46 PhD dissertations, 30 MSc theses, and approximately 68 undergraduate research projects and has coordinated scientific exchange projects between UNICAMP and European universities in France, Germany, Holland, and Spain. She has served as the head of the department of food engineering at her university, as associate dean for undergraduate studies of food engineering, and as associated director at the Chemical, Biological, and Agricultural Pluridisciplinary Research Center.
Most recently, Dr. Meireles' expertise has led her to serve as the coordinator of Food Science for the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) between 2014 and 2017. She is also an independent consultant for LASEFI, partner and innovative director for Bioativos Naturais, Ltd., and a current invited professor at the school of food engineering at her alma mater, State University of Campinas.
Prior to obtaining her PhD, Dr. Meireles completed a Bachelor of Science in 1977 and Master of Science in Food Engineering in 1979 at UNICAMP. Her scientific interests currently include the production of extracts from aromatic, medicinal, and spice plants by supercritical fluid extraction and conventional techniques such as steam distillation and green solvent extraction. She has authored more than 270 articles in specialized journals and over 500 published papers, as well as chapters to books.
A presenter at more than 60 lectures at national and international events, Dr. Meireles participated in 90 research projects between 1984 and 2016, and is currently coordinating three technology transfers projects in supercritical fluid extraction from native Brazilian plants. She has been on the editorial board for 11 periodicals, and serves as a reviewer for 35 periodicals. She also edited two books: "Extracting Bioactive Compounds for Food Products: Theory and Applications" and "Fundamentals of Food Engineering."
Certified in food engineering since 1977, Dr. Meireles is an elected fellow of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology since 2014 and a member of the Brazilian Society of Food Science and Technology. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a CAPES-Elsevier Award in 2014 and a Zeferino Vaz Award in 2006 and 2016, and has been included in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World. A contributing member of Visao Mundial in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Dr. Meireles has been married since 1976; she has two children and two grandchildren.
