Mr. Janke has devoted over four decades of his life to the practice of environmental law, serving industries including chemical manufacturing, ore and coal mining, ferrous and nonferrous metal manufacturing, coatings, publishing, food processing, oil refining, transportation, and waste management. He is a retired partner at the prestigious global firm of Jones Day, which acts as principle counsel or significant legal representation for more than half of the Fortune Global 500 companies. Mr. Janke was instrumental in the firm's environmental law team, and was named as one of the Best Lawyers in America numerous times. He is currently a sole practitioner.
In 1969, Mr. Janke earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Wittenberg University. His legal career began with a J.D. from Duke University in 1974, and the rising star was offered a position at Jones Day based out of Cleveland. Mr. Janke served from 1974 to 1983 as an associate of the firm, transitioning to a position as partner from 1984 to 2010. He was admitted to practice by the Ohio State Bar Association and is still registered as active. Additionally, he served with the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1971 in the Vietnam War.
One of Mr. Janke's proudest achievements has been representing for decades the U.S. only beryllium supplier. He has also appeared to further the scholarship of environmental law, including the 2007 presentation "The Environmental Lawyer's Role in Toxic Tort Litigation" at Ohio Northern University's Petit College of Law. The 2002 second annual Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business ranked four Jones Day lawyers among the top environmental law practitioners in the District of Columbia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania markets, including Mr. Janke. They reported he was a "superb transactional lawyer' and that his "opinion carries real weight" according to clients.
In his civic duties, Mr. Janke served as chairman of the Ohio Water Resources Council Advisory Group. He has served on the advisory committees of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, and has chaired the Environmental Controls Committee of the Business Law Section in the American Bar Association. Mr. Janke was made a fellow of the American College of Environmental Lawyers, an honor extended by invitation only to experienced lawyers "marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality." Additionally, he is a member of the Greater Cleveland Bar Association and the Ohio Bar Association. In recognition of Mr. Janke's services to environmental law, he was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World and the first edition of the 1987 to 1988 volume of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
