Mr. Smith simultaneously spent five years as a mathematics instructor at Dean College in Franklin, MA, between 2000 and 2005. He has been on the board of directors for the Greater Boston Mathematics League in Canton, MA, since 1989 and an advisor for the league since 1980. He is also a longtime in-house coordinator for the National High School Mathematics Exam and a supervisor of the Math Olympiad Level I Exam. He formerly served two years as an educational consultant for St. Catherine of Siena in Norwood, MA, between 1990 and 1992.
A longstanding member of the National Council of Teachers and the National Catholic Educational Association, Mr. Smith is also actively involved in his local community, having served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Mary's Church since 1984. He formerly coached Dedham Youth Soccer for seven years beginning in 1985, served as president of St. Catherine's Homes and School Association from 1989 to 1991, and was vice chairman of the Cardinal Parish Planning Council for 12 years between 1990 and 2002. A recipient of the Ryken Award from Xaverian Sponsored Schools in 2011, the award recognizes adult members of the Xaverian community who inspire others on campus to live up to the school's highest ideals. Mr. Smith was also a grant recipient by the National Science Foundation in 1993.
Mr. Smith has held a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Boston College since 1971, the same year he began teaching at the prep school.
