A former educational diagnostician for nearly 30 years, beginning with the Pampa Independent School District in Texas in 1987, Ms. Cates officially retired in 2015 after spending one year as a consultant with the Post Independent School District. Entering the field of education as a special education teacher with Eagle Pass Independent School District in Texas in 1974, she later transitioned into an educational diagnostician supervisory role and as a school counselor before focusing her career entirely as an educational diagnostician.
Ms. Cates is a certified teacher, counselor and educational diagnostician in the state of Texas who also holds a certification in administration. She earned her undergraduate degree at Baylor University in 1970, followed by a Master of Education at Sul Ross State University in 1977. Since earning her degrees, she has been very active within her community by serving on the board of directors for the Scurry County Sheltered Workshop and the Texas Association of Children with Learning Disabilities and as a coach for the Texas Special Olympics in both Beeville and Sinton. More recently, she has served a as member of the sanctuary choir for the Floral Heights United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls from 1995 to 2005, with the Stephen Ministry from 1992 to 2005, the Stephen Ministry L.T.C. since 2005, and the St. John's United Methodist Church since 2013. She has also been known for her service as a Sunday school teacher, youth coordinator and volunteer.
Married to her husband Dennis Lynn Cates since 1975, Ms. Cates enjoys swimming, coin collecting, singing, making jewelry and travelling. She has been highlighted in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women between 1999 and 2016.
