Dr. Freed is a chemist who is best known for his groundbreaking work in electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Currently a Frank and Robert Laughlin professor emeritus of physical chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Cornell University since 2016, as well as a member of the faculty for 55 years, he is also the founder of the National Biomedical Center for Advanced Electron Spin Resonance Technology, which is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health. Serving as the organization's director, Dr. Freed leads the laboratory, which has pioneered many theoretical and instrumental technologies and serves as the basis for the Center; he also provides overall direction of the Center, and participates in all areas of its scientific programs and its administration.
A world leader in electron spin resonance, Dr. Freed has been recognized with numerous national and international awards for his contributions to the field, including the 2014 Joel Hildebrand Award, the 2013 ISMAR Prize from the International Society of Magnetic Resonance (ISMAR), and the 2008 E. Bright Wilson Award. He has also received numerous fellowships from such organizations as the A.P. Sloan Research Foundation, the John Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and the Weizmann Institute of Science, among others.
Authoring and co-authoring multiple articles in the Journal of Physical Chemistry, Journal of Chemical Physics, Biophysical Journal, and other peer-reviewed journals, he has also served as associate editor, member of the editorial board, and in other capacities for many related publications. A longstanding member of the American Chemical Society and the Biophysical Society, Dr. Freed is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Physical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the International Society of Magnetic Resonance, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was also elected a Fellow of the International Electron Spin Resonance Society in 2017 after having been its President (2011-2013). Furthermore, he has been a visiting professor at a number of institutions abroad, including L'Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris; Tokyo University, the University of Padua, and the University of Geneva.
Earning a Bachelors' in Chemical Engineering from Yale University in 1958, and a Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry from Columbia University in 1959 and 1962, respectively, Dr. Freed then spent a year as a National Science Foundation fellow at Cambridge University from 1962 to 1963 before accepting his first teaching appointment at Cornell University.
While pursuing his degrees, Dr. Freed also married his wife, H. Renee Strauch, in 1961. He has two children. Notably, he has been highlighted in countless editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
