Dr. Shen is a gynecologic oncologist and clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive services at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). Teaching in this capacity for the past 14 years, he has also maintained his own private practice as a consulting gynecologic oncologist at both the California Pacific Medical Center and St. Mary's Medical Center of San Francisco. In addition to being affiliated at both of those locations, Dr. Shen is also affiliated with Mills-Peninsula Hospital Center, Seton Medical Center, and Chinese Hospital. He previously served as director of gynecologic oncology in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the California Pacific Medical Center for 15 years, was an associate clinical professor at the University of California, acting director at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and was director of gynecologic oncology at St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospital Center of Columbia University.
Known for his expertise in the surgical treatment of female reproductive organs such as the ovary, uterus, and cervix, Dr. Shen uses both surgical and non-surgical approaches. Extremely devoted to his patients, he is a very compassionate caretaker who enjoys handling every aspect of patient care from the beginning to the completion of surgery as well as post-operative care. As the eldest of three brothers, all of whom have since become doctors, Dr. Shen's eldest son is also a physician and associate professor of surgery at UCSF, as well as several of his nieces and nephews.
A diplomate of the American Board of OBGYN and gynecologic oncology since 1982 and 1983 and a licensed physician in the state of California since 1976, Dr. Shen acquired an MD at the National Taiwan University in 1970 and a Ph.D. in physiology at the UCSF in 1975. He then completed his internship and residency work in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California at San Francisco in 1979, Galloway fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 1978, and clinical fellowship at the Women's Hospital at the University of Southern California between 1979 and 1981.
An elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the International Gynecologic Cancer Society, Dr. Shen has served on over a dozen boards throughout his career. He is currently on the peer review committee for the Brown & Toland Medical Group in San Francisco, the board of trustees of the Taiwan Foundation for the Development of Biomedical Technology and the Chinese Cancer Memorial Foundation, and the board of directors of the New Hope Chinese Cancer Care Foundation. The recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award from UCSF for his dedication, Dr. Shen has also been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America.
