Dr. Ellis was the former president and director of the Museum of Science, one of the world's largest and most-visited science and technology centers, for over a decade. Presented with the opportunity in 1989, he joined the Boston museum after spending close to 30 years in higher education. Following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a longtime professor and academic administrator, Dr. Ellis was president of Lafayette College in Easton, PA, for 12 years and previously held a number of faculty and administrative positions at the University of New Hampshire.
Retiring from the museum in 2003, Dr. Ellis began serving as an interim administrator, board member, consultant and arbitrator. He served as interim executive director of the Harvard Museum of Natural History, interim president of the Boston Children's Museum, president of The Museum Group, and as the first senior fellow with The Boston Foundation between 2003 and 2004. He has been active as a consultant for museums, science centers and institutions of higher education and as a board member for several non-profit institutions. Continuing to provide pro bono consulting and serving on various boards in retirement, Dr. Ellis enjoys giving back to the community.
Currently serving on the board of directors of the Conservation Law Foundation, the Forsyth Institute, the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences and other non-profits, Dr. Ellis is also a longstanding member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the New Hampshire Audubon, the MIT Museum and the Seacoast Science Center. Throughout his career, he has authored numerous articles in various peer-reviewed journals and other publications, including the Public Policy and Aging Report, the Journal of Chemical Education and the Journal of Chemical Physics, and he has contributed chapters to several books by other authors as well.
Earning a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry with honors at Haverford College in 1958 and a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962, Dr. Ellis later attended the Advanced Management Program of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. Between 1979 and 2002, he was awarded seven different honorary degrees at various universities. A distinguished fellow of Wheaton College between 2001 and 2002, Dr. Ellis also received an Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award from his alma mater, Haverford College, in 2008. Married to Marion Elizabeth Schmitt since 1961 with three children and seven grandchildren, he enjoys woodworking, his 1956 Ford Thunderbird, and his cabin on the coast of Maine. Notably, Dr. Ellis has been cited in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as numerous editions of Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World.
