Ira H. Gewolb Celebrates More Than 40 Years of Expertise in the Field of Medicine



    EAST LANSING, MI, March 13, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ira H. Gewolb, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who in America. As in all Marquis biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. With more than 40 years of professional excellence, Dr. Gewolb has served as tenured Professor and Chief of the Division of Neonatology and Associate Chair for Research at the College of Human Medicine for Michigan State University since 2004. Previously, he was tenured Professor and Chief of Neonatology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Prior to moving to the University of Maryland in 1989, he worked as associate professor of pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and Director of Newborn Services at the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center from 1982 to 1989.

Dr. Gewolb began his career by pursuing an education at Yale University, earning a Bachelor of Science, Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, with Honors in Biology, in 1972. He would complete his studies at Yale in 1976, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. After completing his medical degree, he did his residency in Pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital with Harvard University from 1976 to 1979. He then returned to Yale to complete his subspecialty training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (1979-1982).

Dr. Gewolb is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine. Having previously served as President of the Eastern Society for Pediatric Research, he maintains membership with the American Pediatric Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society for Pediatric Research. He has been on the board of directors for the Maryland and the Mid-Michigan March of Dimes since 1986. He currently holds 3 U.S. patents on probiotics and on a new device to non-invasively diagnose gastroesophageal reflux in neonates. He has also contributed about 80 articles to professional journals and has mentored numerous neonatology fellows.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gewolb has accrued many honors and accolades for his contributions. Recognized among America's Top Doctors by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. from 2005 to 2017, he has been honored by receiving Young Investigator Awards from the New England Perinatal Society (1980 and 1981), the Basil O'Connor Research Award from the March of Dimes (1986), and a Research Career Development Award from the Juvenile Diabetes Association (1984). Over the years he has been a Principal or Co-Investigator on grants from United Cerebral Palsy, the National Institutes of Health, the American Diabetes Association, the National Eye Institute, and numerous pharmacy sponsored grants.

A proud son of Holocaust survivors, Dr. Gewolb was inspired to enter the field by a desire to help children at the most critical times of their lives. The highlight of his career thus far has been his many invitations to Russia, China, and India. In Russia, he was honored for his assistance in building their new NICU by an honorary Professorship at the Kazan Institute of Medical Sciences in Tatarstan. In China he did similar work, teaching, helping design a new NICU, and building scientific bridges. In India he was involved in a successful NIH-sponsored project involving the use of probiotics to prevent infection in infants. Looking towards the future, he hopes to bring his latest invention to market, cementing his legacy as a leading medical innovator and an internationally recognized physician.
