For 38 years, Ms. Sterns was a practicing attorney with Sterns and Tennen in Phoenix, AZ. Retiring in 2016, her firm focused on assisting individuals and corporations in various civil and criminal offenses. Going into private practice just one year after earning her JD at the University of Arizona in 1977, she worked diligently to build up her law firm. Completing her undergraduate degree at Arizona State University in 1974, just prior to attending law school, she was later admitted to practice by the Arizona Bar Association, the U.S. District Court of Arizona and the Supreme Court of the United States.
Ms. Sterns served as a judge pro tempore for the Superior Court of Arizona, County of Maricopa, from 1983 to 1999, and again from 2003 to 2007. Her extensive knowledge also led to her serving on the Domestic Relations Study Committee, as a judge for the Jessup International Moot Court Competition's semi-final rounds and regional rounds, guest lecturer at the American Graduate School of International Management, guest lecturer for the Princeton University Space Manufacturing Facilities Conference, and longtime participant of the International Astronautical Federation. Furthermore, Ms. Sterns contributed chapters to books, articles to various professional journals, was a member of the Arizona Law Review, a contributor of "National Regulation of Space Activities" in 2010, and a co-editor of "Public Law, Private Law, Metalaw and Public Policy in Space, A Liber Amicorum in Honor of Ernst Fasan" in 2016. She has been an organizer, panel coordinator, presenter and participant at professional conferences in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
A co-recipient of an Appreciation Award by the International Institute of Space Law in 1998, and a Social Science Book Award recipient by the International Academy of Astronautics in 2011, Ms. Sterns was heavily involved with such organizations as the American Bar Association's international law section and aerospace law committee, was a longtime member of the American Society of International Law, the Maricopa County Bar Association and the International Law Association. She also served on the board of directors and is an Honorary Director of the International Institute of Space Law.
Married to Leslie I. Tennen of Sterns and Tennen since 2005, Ms. Sterns is currently active as an associate member of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), and is a full member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the IAA Permanent Committee on the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). She is a former member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the American Quarter Horse Association. She has been cited in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
