Rosaly Correa-de-Araujo, MD, MSc, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Senior Scientific Adviser to the Director of the Division of Geriatrics and Clinical Gerontology at the National Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Dr. Correa-deĀ­Araujo has been serving in this capacity for the past four years. Her credibility in her particular areas of expertise stems from her extensive study, multiple degrees, as well as many years of experience in both academia and the field.

Dr. Correa-de-Araujo earned an MD at the Federal University of Bahia School of Medicine, Brazil, in 1980. Completing her residency work in pathology at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, from 1980 to 1983, she then received from that same University an MS in Human Pathology in 1986, and a PhD in Morphology and Cellular Biology in 1988. Following, Dr. Correa-de-Araujo held a post-doctoral training in cardiovascular pathology, while serving as a Visiting Associate and Guest Researcher at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), NIH.

Her academic involvement included teaching at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy Experiential Learning Program, the University of Sao Paulo School of Medicine in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil, and the Federal University of Triangulo Mineiro School of Medicine in Brazil. While teaching at the Federal University of Triangulo Mineiro School of Medicine, she also served as the Chief Pathologist at the University Hospital and the Chair of the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine. Dr. Correa-de-Araujo has also served as a consultant for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Brazil and has been employed in numerous other capacities including with The United States Pharmacopeial Convention, and in various other roles across agencies in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including as Director, Women's Health and Gender-Based Research at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) 2002-2006; Director of the Office of the Americas Region (in the Office of Global Health Affairs, Office of the Secretary of Health and Human Services) (2006-2009); and, Deputy Director for the former Office on Disability in the Office of the Secretary of Health and Human Services (2009-2012).

Some of Dr. Correa-de-Araujo's most significant works have included revitalizing and expanding the women's health program at the AHRQ to encompass gender-based research and analysis. She has conducted research on gender differences in drug use and expenditure in a privately insured population of older adults; in gender differences across racial and ethnic groups in the quality of care for acute myocardial infarction and heart failure associated with other comorbidities; in gender differences across racial and ethnic groups in the quality of care for diabetes; and, disparities in access and utilization of health services by older adults. She has also studied the issue of loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia) and loss of muscle strength in older adults and proposed in the medical literature a new terminology "Skeletal Muscle Function Deficit" to embrace the evolving concepts of sarcopenia and age-related muscle dysfunction. She has contributed numerous chapters in diverse topics to books in the medical field, has authored many articles in peer-reviewed journals and has served as a member of numerous scientific journals' editorial boards. Earlier in her career, she made major contributions to the understanding of the pathogenesis of sudden cardiac death in patients with chronic Chagas' heart disease. With her international background and culturally competent skills, she successfully led a Secretarial health diplomacy initiative that culminated with the establishment of a health care training center in Central America and served as the Secretary of Health and Human Services' delegate to the U.S. Mexico-Border Health Commission.

Recently recognized with a Certificate of Commendation from the Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2016 for her contribution to addressing health disparities, she also received other accolades from various federal agencies and other organizations such as the National Academy of Medicine of Brazil and the Gorgas Memorial Institute in the Republic of Panama for her commitment and excellence of her work. Furthermore, Dr. Correa-de-Araujo has been featured in more than 20 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
