SPRINGFIELD, MO, March 15, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present James C. Moyer, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Moyer celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Moyer retired as head of the department of religious studies at Southwest Missouri State University after 22 years in his role. Having dedicated his entire career to academia, he first entered the university as an assistant professor of history in 1970, and soon became an associate professor of religious studies. Earning a BA at Wheaton College in 1963, Master of Divinity at Gordon Divinity School in 1966, and MA and PhD at Brandeis University in 1968 and 1969, respectively, Dr. Moyer knew as soon as he went off to seminary and was given the opportunity to teach Greek to his peers that academia was the path he would soon take. Mentored by William Lane and Glen Barker, two seminary teachers of his at that time, they were also a great influence on his decision.
In 2012, Dr. Moyer was honored with the highest teaching award at the university, the Governor's Award in Teaching. He was previously named Burlington Northern Teacher of the Year by the university in 1984, and was the recipient of a National Endowment of the Humanities grant in 1980, 1984, and 1986. After completing his Ph.D., he also received an archeological fellowship from the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem during 1969-1970.
A former deacon at University Heights Baptist Church in Springfield, MO, and former elder at the 1st and Calvary Presbyterian Church, also in Springfield, Dr. Moyer continues to remain active in his church where he has been a Sunday School teacher for approximately 40 years.
Dr. Moyer was the co-editor of Scripture in Context in 1983 and authored with Victor Matthews, The Old Testament: Text and Context (1997, 2005 and 2012). A member of the Catholic Biblical Association and the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion and member and former regional secretary of the Society of Biblical Literature, he is also a longtime member, member of the editorial board, and Biblical Archaeologist of the American Schools of Oriental Research, where he formerly served as associate trustee, member of the committee on publications, and book review editor. Married to Roberta Helen Goff since 1965, with three children and seven grandchildren, Dr. Moyer was cited in the 4th edition of Who's Who in Religion.
