With nearly 45 years of industry experience to his credit, Dr. Hill currently works as a consultant for the North Carolina Medical Board, having most recently worked as the chief of cardiothoracic surgery for the Charles George VA Medical Center. From 2007 to 2015, he was a consulting professor of surgery at the School of Medicine at Duke University. Prior to these appointments, he held multiple positions for West Virginia University, including clinical professor of surgery at the School of Osteopathic Medicine from 1999 to 2007, professor of surgery from 1996 to 2007, associate professor from 1990 to 1996, and assistant professor of surgery from 1985 to 1990. Previously, Dr. Hill worked at Duke University, serving as a surgical intern at the School of Medicine from 1974 to 1975, resident in surgery from 1974 to 1985, and research associate from 1976 to 1979.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Hill pursued an education at West Virginia University, earning a Bachelor of Arts with honors in 1970. He concluded his studies in 1974, graduating from West Virginia University with a Doctor of Medicine. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Hill became a diplomate of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery and was certified as a Master Scuba Diver by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors.
Beyond his efforts within the field, Dr. Hill has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. Working in the roles of staff surgeon and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Charles George VA Medical Center since 2007, he served this establishment as director of the thoracic surgery program. While at WVU School of Medicine he was chairman of the institutional review board from 1994 to 2004, and the program director for the department of surgery from 1998 to 2003. Likewise, he was a consultant for the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center from 1985 to 2007, a student coordinator for the Department of Surgery at West Virginia University from 1986 to 1997, and director of surgical research with the Department of Surgery at West Virginia University from 1986 to 1988. Additionally, Dr. Hill was a member of the Surgical Education and Self-Assessment Programs, as well as on the Ad-Hoc Committee of the Merit Review Board for Cardiovascular Studies at Washington DC Department of Veterans Administration from 1988 to 1990.
Dr. Hill has also been associated with the Homeowners' Association in Fletcher and in Holden Beach, North Carolina Furthermore, he worked in several roles for Suncrest United Methodist Church, formerly Drummond Chapel United Methodist Church, on the Council on Evangelism from 1999 to 2001, annual conference delegate from 1995 to 1997, and finance committee member from 1994 to 1996. Dr. Hill began his involvement at the Suncrest United Methodist Church as a member-at-large of the Administrative Board from 1987 to 1989 and from 1993 to 1995.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Hill remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has maintained membership with the Society of University Surgeons, the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the International Society of Surgery, the Association of Program Directors in Surgery and the Association for Surgical Education. He is actively involved with the Southern Surgical Association, the West Virginia Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, The Society of Thoracic Surgery, and American College of Surgeons, State Medical Association, The Mended Hearts, Inc., the Lakeview Country Club and the Pines Golf and Country Club. Dr. Hill is also associated with several fraternal societies, including the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and Alpha Epsilon Delta.
Dr. Hill has held many appointments with the American College of Surgeons, including on the council of the West Virginia chapter from 1999 to 2001, secretary-treasurer from 2001 to 2002, vice president from 2002 to 2004, president from 2004 to 2005, and chairman of the Committee on Applicants for District 1 of West Virginia. He has served the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association as program chairman from 1995 to 1996 and on their council from 1999 to 2000. Between 1994 and 1996, he was recognized as vice president, president-elect, and president of the West Virginia affiliate of the American Heart Association. Dr. Hill was also the vice president of the Monongalia County Medical Association in 1993 and 2007.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Hill has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. A Teaching Scholar at Duke University from 1984 to 1985, he was recognized as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Sabiston Society, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Featured in the "Guide to America's Top Surgeons" since 2008, he was honored among the Best Doctors in America from 2001 to 2008 and since 2013, as a Top Doctor by Business North Carolina from 2013 to 2015, in Top Surgeon from 2009 to 2012, and as an Outstanding Attending Surgeon by West Virginia University from 1998 to 1999. He has been presented with the Distinguished Service Award by West Virginia University in 2005, the Sowers Award from the Founders' Society at Duke University in 1992, the Merck Medical Book Award in 1974, the Lange Medical Book Award in 1971 and from 1973 to 1974, and the Roche Medical Award in 1972. Dr. Hill has also been selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
