An award-winning university professional and foundation executive, Dr. Richardson is highly regarded for the impact he made over four decades at the higher education level and for his research and publication contributions in the health care area.
Dr. Richardson devoted his academic career to researching the financing and organization of health services in the USA. He served as president of Johns Hopkins University (1990-1995). He was previously graduate dean and vice provost for research at the University of Washington (1981-1984), executive vice president and provost at Pennsylvania State University (1984-1990) and research assistant at the University of Chicago. Before establishing himself professionally, Dr. Richardson earned a BA from Trinity College (Connecticut) in 1962, an MBA (1964) and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1971). After his retirement from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, he served pro bono as professor of policy at Kalamazoo College.
While at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Richardson made efforts to update the curriculum, diversify the student body and faculty, increase cooperation between academic divisions, and secure the school's financial position. By 1995, enrollment had increased to a record 16,330 and a new capital campaign was launched, intended to raise $900 million. African-American and Hispanic enrollment doubled in his five years as president.
Dr. Richardson left academia to become president and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (1995-2005) and became chair and co-trustee of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Trust (1996-2007). Dr. Richardson has also been a director on the boards of the Kellogg Company (1996-2007), the Bank of New York Mellon (1998-2007), Exelon Corporation (2005-2016), CSX Corporation (1992-2008), and Mercantile Bankshares. He has also served on the boards of directors of the Kaiser Family Foundation, the Pew Family Trust, Trinity College (Connecticut) and Kalamazoo College.
He was elected a member of the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences in 1981. He is best known for his role as chair of the Institute's groundbreaking report on medical errors ("To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System") and a following report on the quality of health care in America ("Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century"). He won the Institute of Medicine's David Rall Award in 2007. (The David Rall Medal is awarded to a member of the Institute of Medicine who has demonstrated particularly distinguished leadership as a chair of a study committee or other such activities in a manner that was particularly exemplary, demonstrating a commitment substantially above and beyond the usual expectations of a committee chair.)
He has been awarded honorary degrees from the University of Michigan (2006), the Johns Hopkins University (1995), Tuskegee University (1997), the University of Maryland (1995). Washington College (1995), Goucher College (1995), Loyola College in Maryland (1995) and Thomas Jefferson University (1992). In recognition of his professional excellence, he was named a Kellogg College fellow by Oxford University in 1995.
As he looks to the future, Dr. Richardson intends to continue in his work as an advisor in the field while enjoying his retirement.
