With more than 50 years of professional experience in his fields of expertise, Mr. Guenther was the former president and CEO of the Independent Community Bankers of America in Washington, D.C., for some 20 years until his retirement in 2004. Although retired, Mr. Guenther now works as a consultant. Prior to his time spent as president and CEO, Mr. Guenther was employed by the Independent Community Bankers of America as the CEO and previously the executive vice president, director, executive director, and associate director between 1979 and 2004.
Previously, Mr. Guenther was an assistant to the board of governors of the Federal Reserve Systems from 1975 to 1979, acting deputy of the Office of Special Trade Representative at the Ford White House from 1974 to 1975, the U.S. executive director of the Inter American Development Bank from 1973 to 1974, and the special assistant to U.S. Senator Jacob Javits from 1969 to 1973. In addition, Mr. Guenther worked as a foreign service officer in the Department of State in Washington, D.C., and Santiago, Chile, between 1965 and 1969.
In preparation of his vocational endeavors, Mr. Guenther earned a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, at the University of Rochester in 1957. He subsequently completed postgraduate work at the School of Advanced International Studies at The Johns Hopkins University from 1957 to 1958, the Rangoon Hopkins Center in Burma from 1958 to 1959, and Yale University from 1959 to 1960.
Alongside his career in political science, Mr. Guenther has performed a number of civic duties. The vice-chairman and then Chairman of the board of directors of Washington Campus since 2003, he was a member and chairman of the board of directors of the Homeownership Alliance between 2001 to 2004, the coordinator of the financial services sector of the Council for Critical Infrastructure Protection and Homeland Security in 2002, a member of the Advisory Committee on the Golden Dollar from 1999 to 2000, and a member of the Advisory Council of the U.S. Small Business Administration from 1994 to 2000.
In an effort to remain alert of changes within his industry, Mr. Guenther is affiliated with numerous organizations, including the Independent Community Bankers Association since 1979. He was on the board of directors of Social Compact from 1994 to 1999, board of overseers of the Bretton Woods Committee of the Russian-American Bankers Forum in 1993, the Exchequer Club, an executive director of the AARP Money Management Program, and the Kenwood Country Club. Additionally, Mr. Guenther's media coverage has included contributing articles regarding banking in several professional journals.
In recognition of his exceptional achievements, Mr. Guenther was presented with the Hero Award from the Homeownership Alliance in 2004, the Electronic Funds Transfer Achievement Award from the U.S. Department of the Treasury in 1995, a Presidential Pen for Work on the Depository Deregulation and Monetary Control Act (DIDMCA) of 1980. Most recently, he was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the U.S. Banker in 2004, which he considers to be the highlight of his career.
He is also the recipient of the prestigious Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Guenther was also the subject of the Federal Reserve Oral History Project in 2019, notably for his highly significant legislative achievements for the U.S. central bank. Married to Lilly Hoesli with one child and two grandchildren, Mr. Guenther attributes his success to his mentors and family. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, playing tennis, and traveling.
