In 2014, Mr. Adams retired as of counsel at Frost Brown Todd (formerly Frost & Jacobs), after having served the firm for more than four decades. His role at the firm changed substantially over the course of his career; he began in banking and commercial law services for banks and clients of the firm, which led him to develop his own client base in mergers and acquisitions and general corporate law. When he retired, he was applying his expertise in bankruptcy law representing large and medium size debtors in chapter 11 cases. Mr. Adams served as a partner of the firm from 1971 to 2000, as the founder and chairman of the firm's Bankruptcy Group, and as the Managing Partner and Chairman of the firm. He began his career at Frost & Jacobs as an associate in 1970. He served as tournament counsel with the Western Southern Tennis Masters Tournament from 2003 to 2005. His first position in the legal industry was at Paxton & Seasongood in 1965, where he worked as an associate.
After ending his career at Frost Brown Todd, Mr. Adams served as a visiting professor of comparative business bankruptcy law through the Center for International Legal Studies, Salzburg, Austria from 2007 to 2015. Through the Center, Mr. Adams held a number of appointments as a visiting professor, which included positions at Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Turiba School of Business, Riga, University of Pardubice, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Masaryk University, Brno, The Czech Republic, and Novosibirsk State University, Siberia. He has held a number of other positions in academia, acting as an adjunct professor of secured transactions at the University of Cincinnati College of Law in 1977. He also served the University of Cincinnati as chair of its Economics Center for Education and Research. Additionally, he served in education as a member of the Ohio Board of Regents from 1999 to 2008, as a member of the Governor's Partnership for Continued Learning from 2005 to 2007, and as a board member of the Ohio College Access Network from 2005 to 2007.
Mr. Adams is active in his community and currently serves as a director of Sister Cities International, Washington, D.C.. He is also a director and the historian of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Cincinnati, and previously served the organization as President in 2014. He also recently served as a director and treasurer of the Longboat Cove Condominium Association and as president and board member of Sycamore Trust. He held a number of positions with the Catholic Campus Ministry Association, the Altiora Foundation of Elder High School, the Metropolitan Club of Greater Cincinnati, and the Japan-America Society of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber of Commerce. He also founded The Sister Cities Association of Greater Cincinnati (now known as the Cincinnati USA Sister City Association), and acted as the organization's chair and president. In addition, Mr. Adams served as a trustee of the Jewish Hospital for a number of years and was actively involved with the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority, where he served as a trustee, president, and OKI representative from 1980 to 1991.
Mr. Adams decided to pursue a career in the legal industry through the encouragement of his father. His father was a great career coach, and Mr. Adams initially wanted to be a sports writer. While he was an undergraduate, his father suggested that he apply to law school. He also introduced Mr. Adams to practicing attorneys he knew. The introductions opened up the legal world to him. Mr. Adams was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Mount St. Joseph University in 2006. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Law Degree in 1963 and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Xavier University in 1960. He is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Cincinnati Bar Association.
Mr. Adams is a United States Army Veteran, having served his country as a platoon leader, executive officer and battery commander of a HAWK Missile Battery near Kassel, Germany from 1964 to 1965. After ending his career with the Army, Mr. Adams reported to duty at the law firm of Paxton & Seasongood in Cincinnati where Leonard Meranus was a partner. He was assigned to practice banking and commercial law, and Mr. Meranus guided him through his practice. After five years of service, a major bank client changed law firms and asked Mr. Adams to go with it to the new law firm. The managing partner at the new firm, Charlie Puchta, was renowned in the legal industry. He entrusted Mr. Adams with a lot of responsibility, assigning him as the chief lawyer of the major bank client. Mr. Adams always felt he could go to Mr. Puchta for advice when needed. He has come to attribute his success to both of those great mentors.
In 2002, Mr. Adams was honored as a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. He was inducted into the College at the United States Supreme Court, the highest honor a bankruptcy practitioner can receive. He has received a number of other awards and commendations for his outstanding contributions to the legal industry and the community. He was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement in Law Award by the Cincinnati Bar Association, the Professional Achievement Award by Elder High School, and the German-American Friendship Award by the Federal Republic of Germany in 2016. He was also the recipient of the Award of the Year of the Notre Dame Club of Greater Cincinnati in 2014, the Founders and Guardians Award by the Cincinnati Tennis Club in 1999, the Volunteer Lawyer for the Poor Award for Bankruptcy Services by the Cincinnati Bar Association in 1998, and the Royal Coachman Award by the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority in 1991. In recognition of his professional success, he was listed in Best Lawyers in America and Ohio Super Lawyers.
Mr. Adams is the author of "Catholic Trails West, The Founding Catholic Families of Pennsylvania." He is also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the General Society of Colonial Wars. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis and cooking, especially Italian cuisine.
