Stepping down from his CEO role in January 2014 after 20 years of service Dr. Farrell is now a non-officer employee of ResMed, Inc. His son, Michael Farrell, is currently the CEO and one of the company's directors. Prior to forming ResMed, Inc. Dr. Farrell was the managing director of Baxter Center for Medical Research in Sydney, Australia and also vice president of R&D of Baxter Healthcare in Tokyo, Japan. He was also a member of the executive committee and a vice president of the Baxter World Trade Corporation in Chicago, IL. He had spent many years in academia, teaching at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. During the first few years of his career, he was a research engineer for Union Carbide in Sydney and Montreal and the Chevron Corporation in San Francisco, CA.
An experienced health care executive whose expertise at ResMed, Inc. included operations, product development and sales & marketing, Dr. Farrell also spent many years with several other publicly-held medical technology companies, as well as in public company governance. He has been a member of the board of directors and the nominating & governance and compensation committees for NuVasive for a total of thirteen years. NuVasive is a NASDAQ-listed company which develops and market products for the surgical treatment of spine disorders. Dr. Farrell was chair of the executive council division of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School (2010-2013) and serves on two faculty advisory boards at the University of California at San Diego, the Rady Business School and the Jacobs Engineering School. He is also a member of the MIT Dean of Engineering's Advisory Council and a long-standing member of the Harvard MIT Health Sciences & Technology Council.
Dr. Farrell holds a Bachelor of Engineering in chemical engineering with honors from the University of Sydney, a Master of Science in chemical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering and bioengineering from the University of Washington, as well as a Doctor of Science from the University of New South Wales. He has also completed corporate governance case studies and course work from Harvard Business School.
