A widely regarded federal program administrator, educator and consultant, Dr. Sorter served as an affiliate professor with the University of Maryland prior to his retirement in 1996. Throughout the course of his career, he has contributed numerous articles and chapters to professional publications pertaining to his areas of expertise. In recognition of his contributions to the field of education, Dr. Sorter was recently honored as the recipient of an Outstanding Professional Award from the University of Maryland in 2005. Early in his career, he was selected to receive numerous commendations from the Community Development Society, including a Distinguished Service Award, Community Award and Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to Community Development. Since the inception of his career, Dr. Sorter has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in Finance and Industry and Who's Who in the World.
Prior to pursuing a career as an educator, Dr. Sorter received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland in 1967. He went on to complete a master's degree in city and regional planning through Howard University in 1969, and Ph.D. through the University of Maryland in 1972. Upon completing formal education, Dr. Sorter briefly served as a consultant and senior planner with the National Capital Park and Planning Commission with the State of Maryland. He also worked as a consultant to the Mental Health Association of Prince George's County for two years. As a Certified Community Planner, Dr. Sorter has served as a reviewer for the Community Development Society.
Dr. Sorter entered the field of education in 1971 when he accepted positions as instructor of psychology and sociology with Prince George's Community College and Howard University. He initially joined the University of Maryland in 1972 as an assistant professor with the Department of Agriculture & Extension Education before rising through the ranks as a coordinator of the Rural Information Center and specialist with the Department of Community Resource Development in association with the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service.
Prior to his retirement in 1996, Dr. Sorter served as an affiliate professor with the University of Maryland for 10 years. During this time, he also worked as an extension advisor to several international programs through the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in addition to serving as the chief of welfare operations with the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Although Dr. Sorter had initially intended to only make changes in a single state, he takes great pride in his ability to effect positive change throughout the world.
