Mr. Appel has devoted most of his career to practicing complex commercial litigation and health care law. He has counseled and litigated in courts and arbitrations throughout the country in a wide variety of matters, and has represented academic medical centers, managed care organizations and other health care providers and insurers in rendering advice on an expansive variety of health law issues. For the past 15 years, Mr. Appel also has served as an arbitrator and mediator of commercial and health care disputes. His matters range from one-day hearings with relatively low amounts at stake to multi-week hearings involving tens of millions of dollars. He is currently a member of the Large Complex Case, National Health Care and Commercial Rosters of Neutrals of the American Arbitration Association, the Dispute Resolvers Panel of the American Health Lawyers Association, the National Health Care and Commercial Panels of Neutrals of the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution, and the Mediation Panel of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He also is a Fellow of the American College of e-Neutrals and accredited as a Member by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and New York University Law School, Mr. Appel holds a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and a Juris Doctor degree. Upon his graduation from law school, he became licensed to practice law in the state and federal courts of New York, and thereafter the 2nd, 4th and 11th Circuit Courts of Appeals. In order to remain engaged within his professional circles, he affiliates himself with the New York City, New York State and American Bar Associations, and the American Health Lawyers Association.
Reflective of Mr. Appel's status as a leader among his profession, he has earned significant recognition for his work.
