Prior to these appointments, he was Research Director for The ExOne Company from 2003 to 2012, and co-founder of Concurrent Technologies Corporation, serving as vice president and chief technology officer from 1988 to 2000. He was the vice president and chief technology officer for Scienda Building Sciences from 2000 to 2002, co-founder and Technical Director of Deformation Control Technology from 1980 to 1988, as well as a professor of engineering for the University of Pittsburgh from 1975 to 1989, where he received the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1983. Dr. Kuhn began his career as a professor of engineering at Drexel University from 1966 to 1974.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Kuhn pursued an education at Carnegie-Mellon University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1962. He continued his studies with a Master of Science at Carnegie-Mellon University in 1963. Dr. Kuhn concluded his academic efforts at Carnegie-Mellon University in 1966, graduating with a Ph.D.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Kuhn has contributed to numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has served as a professor and director of the Swanson Center for Product Innovation at the University of Pittsburgh since 2010, on the industrial advisory committees for Pittsburgh Public Schools since 2010, and as an industrial advisory board member at Robert Morris University since 2006. Notably, he was recognized on the board of directors for the Pittsburgh Technology Council from 1997 to 2000, board of trustees for Penn Highlands Community College from 1996 to 2000, board of directors for the Johnstown Chiefs hockey team from 1995 to 2000, director of advanced technology programs for Penn Highlands Community College from 1994 to 1996, and director of the freshman engineering program at the University of Pittsburgh from 1981 to 1988. Additionally, Dr. Kuhn was a member of the Civic Advisory Committee and president of the Richland Athletic Foundation in Gibsonia, PA, from 1978 to 1982, president of the PTA in Gibsonia, PA, from 1976 to 1977, chairman of the Laurel Highlands Cancer Program, and board director for Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Kuhn remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He has worked in several roles for ASM International, including chairman of manufacturing technology, on the nominating committee, and as chairman of the executive board of the Pittsburgh chapter. Likewise, he maintains lifetime membership with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Powder Metallurgy Institute, The Materials Society, and the SME. He is also actively involved with the American Society for Engineering Education, and ASTM International. Dr. Kuhn has also found success with his written work as well, having authored "Powder Forging" in 1990, and having edited "Powder Metallurgy Processing" in 1978 and "The ASM Handbook on Mechanical Testing" in 2000.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Kuhn has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his impressive career. A lifetime fellow of ASM International, he was presented with several awards from that same organization, including the Zay Jeffries Award, the Edgar C. Bain Award, and a Gold Medal in 2008. In 2011, he received the Eli Whitney Award from SME, which he followed with a Distinguished Collaborator Award from America Makes in 2014. The recipient of the Distinguished Services Award by the Metal Powders Industries Organization, Dr. Kuhn was also selected for inclusion in multiple editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
