Dr. Brandes is a board-certified neurologist with more than 40 years of professional experience. He is renowned in his field for his outstanding research in neurological disorders and expertise in multiple sclerosis. He currently serves as an MS physician at the Hope Multiple Sclerosis Center in Knoxville, TN, a position he has held since 2009. Since 2013, he has also served as a Clinical Instructor of Neurology at South College in Knoxville.
Prior to moving to Knoxville, from 1977-2008 Dr. Brandes was the founder and director of the Northridge Neurological Center, a multi-physician private neurology practice in Northridge, CA, a suburb of Los Angeles. Subsequently, he also founded and directed the Northridge Multiple Sclerosis Center from 1996-2008. During this time, he also served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, a position he held from 1978 to 2008.
Dr. Brandes had decided to pursue a career in the field of neurology because he was fascinated by the brain and its functions and disorders, specifically multiple sclerosis. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a doctorate in medicine and a master's degree in biochemistry. He also holds a Bachelor of Science from Knox College. After graduating with an MD, he continued his medical training as an intern with the UCLA/VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Following that he completed the first MS Fellowship in the United States while at UCLA/VA, and then he went on to complete his residency in neurology. Dr. Brandes has also been recognized as a Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist by the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers since 2004. He is currently licensed to practice medicine in the states of California and Tennessee. He is also elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Heart Association Stroke Council.
Dr. Brandes has been involved in a variety of research projects involving cerebral vascular disorders, sleep medicine, immunosuppressive treatment, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, glatiramer acetate studies, beta-interferon studies, sleep disorders in multiple sclerosis, and medication adherence. He has also done research in strokes, Huntington's disease, neuropathic pain, sleep disorders, and other neurological conditions. He has given numerous presentations on multiple sclerosis both nationally and abroad and has authored 25 articles about multiple sclerosis research and treatment in peer-reviewed medical journals. Dr. Brandes has been recognized as a National and a Regional Top Doctor and is also the recipient of the Top Doctor Award by Castle Connolly Medical.
