Dr. Galambos is a registered professional engineer and esteemed educator whose research has been widely published in technical books and scholarly articles. He received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in civil engineering from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering from Lehigh University in 1959. After graduating from Lehigh, he taught and conducted research at the university as an assistant and associate professor of civil engineering. In 1965, he began teaching at Washington University in St. Louis, where he was a professor in and later served as head of the department of civil engineering from 1970 to 1978.
Beginning in 1981, Dr. Galambos taught at the University of Minnesota as a professor of engineering. Since 1997, he has served as emeritus professor of structural engineering. With research interests including the design and behavior of steel structures, structural design standards, and the stability and reliability of steel structures, he is a recognized authority in his field. Dr. Galambos received honorary doctoral degrees from the Technical University of Budapest, the University of North Dakota and the University of Minnesota. He was elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering in 1979, and he is a distinguished member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). In addition to his status as such, he received ASCE's Norman Medal in 1983, the Shortridge Hardesty Award in 1988, the E.E. Howard Award in 1992, and the Nathan M. Newmark Medal in 2004. He also earned the T.R. Higgins Award from the American Institute of Steel Construction. As a result of his affiliation with the organization, during the 1980s, he developed a standard for designed steel structures called load and resistance factor design that is widely used in the industry to this day. Looking back on his career, Dr. Galambos is most proud of the impact he has been able to make on the lives and careers of his former students, many of whom have gone on to join the National Academy of Engineering.
