A retired professor of pediatrics at Ohio State University since 2005, Dr. Johnson was a member of the faculty for 24 years and an attending physician in the university's autism clinic from 2002 to 2005. He formerly served as the director of the child maltreatment program at the Children's Hospital in Columbus, OH, for 21 years, taught and served as the assistant dean at Eastern Tennessee State University, and taught pediatrics at the University of Iowa. Since 2008, Dr. Johnson has been an adjunct professor of pediatrics in the College of Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University.
Recognized for his many years of sacrifice and hard work in academia, the Ohio State University College of Medicine acknowledged Dr. Johnson with a Distinguished Educator Award in 2003. He previously received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Christopher Columbus Society in 2002, a Child Advocacy Award from the Ohio State Attorney General in 1998, three Certificates of Appreciation, one from the Arc of the United States in 1980 and two from the ARC in 1978 and 1979, and a Certificate of Achievement from the US Army Europe in 1967.
Dr. Johnson earned his undergraduate degree with honors at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1957 and Doctor of Medicine at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1961. He completed a pediatric residency and a one year fellowship on Child Development at the Los Angeles Children's Hospital. Three years later, he served his country as a captain in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army between 1964 and 1967. He has since contributed chapters to books by other authors, including one on the topic of child maltreatment for two issues of "Nelson's Pediatric Textbook," as well as articles to multiple peer-reviewed journals, including the American Academy of Pediatrics on various topics of child mistreatment.
A member of the Rubber City Artists Group, Dr. Johnson is also an active member and past president of Akron Toastmasters and has been known for his time served as advocacy chairman for the Council of the Copley Fairlawn School Parent Teacher Association. He loves working with his hands, and especially enjoys woodworking, gardening, painting, cartooning and constructing multi-media pieces for local art shows. Dr. Johnson has been cited in over a dozen editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
