Mr. Allen received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters in 2017
OXFORD, MS, April 06, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Jere H. Allen with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Allen celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
An internationally known artist and a professor emeritus of art at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mr. Allen first began teaching at the university as an instructor in 1972. Relocating from Alabama to Mississippi to teach at the university, he retired in 2000 after 28 years of service. Prior to accepting his first appointment at the University of Mississippi, he spent one year teaching at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson, TN, between 1971 and 1972.
Reflecting back on a wonderful career in academia, Mr. Allen is also a talented professional artist whose work has been best described as figurative, concerning himself with the representation of political and social realities. Showcased as an exhibitor across the country, most recently at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville, FL, between January 28, 2017 and April 2, 2017, the exhibition was titled "Frank Rampolla: DNA of the Mark." His artwork has also been included in the traveling exhibition, "Outward Bound: American Art on the Brink of the 21st Century." Some of his solo exhibitions have included shows at Stadtsche Galerie Paderborn, Der Kunstkreis Hameln, and Oldenburger Kunstverein in Germany, as well as the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC, the Carol Robinson Gallery in New Orleans, and the Southside Gallery in Oxford. Furthermore, Mr. Allen's work hangs in such permanent collections as Coos Art Museum in Coos Bay, OR, in the City of Hameln, Germany, at the Huntsville Museum of Alabama, and the Robert I. Kahn Gallery of the Temple Emanu El in Houston, TX.
Becoming involved in his profession largely due to the enthusiasm and encouragement of Fiore Custode, his former teacher whom he considered dynamic, Mr. Allen also earned the opportunity to become a studio assistant of the artist Frank Rampolla. Greatly influenced by his art, attitude, intellect, and drive, it was during his hours in Frank Rampolla's studio that continues to serve as a key influence in Mr. Allen's work today.
Mr. Allen served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1964 to 1970. He earned a four-year fine arts certificate in 1969, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ringling School of Art and Design in 1970, followed by a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Tennessee in 1972. Furthermore, he studied on a Group Studies Abroad Fulbright Grant in Costa Rica, received the Visual Art Award of the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters in 1993, and accepted an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Mississippi Arts Commission. Included in the 60th edition of Who's Who in America, Mr. Allen received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters in 2017, and a Susan B. Herron Award from the Mississippi Arts Commission in 1996. Married for many years to his wife Joe Ann Marshall, he has two children. For more information, please visit www.jerehallen.com.
