Alongside his professional endeavors at Boston College, Dr. Baum has worked internationally as a fellow and lecturer of various organizations, including as a research fellow with the Deutsches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung in Berlin, Germany, and a fellow with the Life Course Centre in Brisbane, Australia. Additionally, he has been an invited lecturer of the Global Initiative Program with the Bank of Korea, a visiting fellow in the School of Economics and Finance at the Queensland University of Technology, and a visiting lecturer of the W.T.O. Chairs Programme at the University of Mauritius. Furthermore, Dr. Baum has been an invited lecturer at the University of Birmingham in the U.K., a visiting fellow at the University of York, a visiting professor at the Kyiv School of Economics in Kyiv, Ukraine, and a visiting research fellow at the University of Glasgow.
In preparation for his illustrious career, Dr. Baum first obtained a Bachelor of Arts in economics, with honors, from Kalamazoo College in 1972, followed by a Master of Arts in economics from Florida Atlantic University in 1973. He concluded his education by earning a Doctor of Philosophy in economics from the University of Michigan in 1977. He attributes his success to his multiple mentors in his undergraduate and graduate undertakings; particularly, Philip Thomas, William Stronge, and Philip Howrey.
Throughout his career, Dr. Baum has contributed to the community by serving as an editor and associate editor of several publications, including the International Journal of Computational Economics and Econometrics, the Journal of Statistical Software, the Stata Journal, and Computational Economics. He has also served as an author of articles to professional journals and various books, including "An Introduction to Stata Programming, Second Edition" in 2016 and "An Introduction to Modern Econometrics Using Stata" in 2006, which was translated into Chinese and Russian.
A former member of the advisory council for the Society for Computational Economics, Dr. Baum has maintained affiliation with numerous professional circles. He previously served as the secretary-treasurer for the Society for Economic Dynamics and Control from 1989 to 1992. Furthermore, he remains a member of the American Economic Association and the Royal Economic Society.
In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Baum has been honored with several accolades throughout his career. From 1973 to 1975, he held a University Fellowship from the University of Michigan. In addition, he was presented with the Howard Memorial Prize in Economics from Kalamazoo College in 1972. In addition, Dr. Baum was the co-investigator of two sizeable research grants, one sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the other sponsored by the NIH (National Institutes of Health). However, the highlight of Dr. Baum's career was the publication of "An Introduction to Modern Econometrics Using Stata," which contributed to the expansion of the economics market and is used as a reference to this day.
