PARIS, FRANCE, April 10, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Pierre Evesque, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Evesque celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Recently retiring in 2017 as a director of research at the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Dr. Evesque spent 37 years within this public organization, with a long last stay in Châtenay-Malabry, France (1990-2017) in the mechanics lab of Ecole Centrale Paris (an engineering school in the suburbs of Paris). Under the responsibility of the French Ministry of Education and Research, CNRS was founded in 1939 to develop scientific information and support research training, as well as contribute to the promotion and application of research results, among other responsibilities. Dr Evesque started his career as an assistant professor and researcher for two years at ESPCI Paris, an engineering school in the heart of Paris, France, before being hired by CNRS in 1981; Dr Evesque spent his next first 10 years of research with CNRS in Optics labs (consecutively at ESPCI, UCLA, and Paris VI University). Dr Evesque focused in the beginning of his career on new physical properties of materials generated by adding some disorder, starting his career with optical properties of defects in crystals using laser pulse excitation and time resolved spectroscopy at low temperature, continuing with transport problems such as the Anderson transition or the transport by tunnel effect in percolation lattice in the excited states of doped crystals, using chemical reaction formalism for trapping or fusion. He measured experimentally at that time (1983) the spectral dimension of the percolation lattice, what demonstrated unambiguously the validity of the percolation model and stopped the discussion on this system. Since 1987, Dr Evesque turned to a new type of disordered system, the so-called problem of "sand pile" mechanics, and he was hired at Ecole Centrale Paris (1990), where he has continued on these topics for the rest of his career. Developing high-value low-cost experiments first, he starts studying avalanches at the surface of a pile and convection generated by low-frequency large-amplitude vibration; he initiated Master & PhD students to basic low-cost research. He formalized the experimental results of soil mechanics in terms of the dynamical system theory. Through collaborations, he studied sand behavior using large costly apparatus (sand avalanche in high–gravity system at the LCPC (Laboratoire central des Ponts et Chaussées Nantes) large centrifuge; segregation and packing density studied by IRM and X ray tomography at Orléans University. Dr Evesque benefitted from a few experiments on granular media on ESA rocket flights (1998-2005), from many parabolic flights with zero G Airbus (CNES, Novespace, 2000-2011), and with Chinese satellite SJ8 (2007). The results of those experiments were exposed at "Palais de la Découverte" (the well-known Science Museum in the center of Paris) in 2008 during 2 months (February-April). Dr. Evesque has also contributed many articles to various peer reviewed, scientific journals and video films.
Dr Evesque realized 20 years ago that scientific management needs to improve its reviewing system in order to limit the number of papers and repetitions and to foster a better evaluation. Because of increasing complexity and pluri-disciplinary, scientific communication requires nowadays "a posteriori" reviewing. So Dr Evesque has been testing his idea since 1998, as he modified the Journal "Poudres & Grains" (http://www.poudres-et-grains.eu/ ) in order to promote unbiased and efficient rules of validation in Science (systematic "a posteriori" reviewing by peers and complete discussions published in the same journal). CNRS refused both to evaluate this proposition despite Dr Evesque's periodic claims to the National Committee for scientific evaluation, and to test his idea. More, during the last 4-6 years of his career (2011-2017), he also had to face psychological pressure from his administration and other bad and/or inappropriate discriminatory. For example, during this last period Dr Evesque was denied by his administration the authorization to travel and participate to scientific meetings, to use the funds he had obtained from other agencies, to contract with companies and to be chosen as an advisor… So Dr Evesque could study the "role of disorder" in the administration management during the 10 last years of his career, "which is quite interesting" (see "Témoignage n°1 to 8" in the next §, in the top of http://www.poudres-et-grains.eu/ and the blog http://defense-pierre-evesque.over-blog.com/). He concluded that status of science is still on its border lines, as in the time of Galileo.
Throughout his career in physics, Dr. Evesque did consultant work for the European Space Agency in Paris and Pont-à-Mousson, France. He served as a Board member for the Faculté Libre de Théologie Réformée in Aix-en-Provence, France, for many years (1987 – 2005). He is also well-known for his extensive contributions as an editor and author of several books. He is currently the longtime editor of "Poudres et Grains" since 1993, and the author of such books as "Témoignage n°1: Problèmes Éditoriaux et de Reviewing" ("Testimonial #1: Editorial and Reviewing Issues"). Dr. Evesque has also contributed many articles to various peer reviewed, scientific journals on the physical properties generated by disorder in physics.
The former president of the Association for the Study of Micro-mechanics of Granular Materials and longtime member of the American Physical Society, the Materials Research Society, and the French Association of Physics, Dr. Evesque holds an undergraduate degree in physics from Ecole Supérieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielles de Paris, Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Paris VI, and a Doctor "d'Etat" in physics at the University of Paris VI in 1984. He also served in the French Air Force from 1978 to 1979. Married since 1981 to Claire Françoise Bompaire, Dr. Evesque has been included in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the World.
