Dr. Ehlers specializes in the diagnosis and management of medical and surgical vitreoretinal diseases

First completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame in 2000 and then he completed medical school at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 2004. Dr. Ehlers then completed an internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, MO. Following internship, he completed his ophthalmology residency at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, where he also served as chief resident. From 2008 to 2010, Dr. Ehlers completed his vitreoretinal surgery and disease fellowship at the Duke Eye Center in Durham, NC, receiving two prestigious honors as a Heed Fellow and Ronald G. Michels Fellow.
An appointed staff physician on the vitreoretinal service at the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic since 2010, Dr. Ehlers specializes in the diagnosis and management of medical and surgical vitreoretinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular occlusive disease, diabetic retinopathy, vitreoretinal interface disorders, and retinal detachment. Dr. Ehlers was also appointed as an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in 2012.
In 2015, Dr. Ehlers was named the Norman C. and Donna L. Harbert Endowed Chair in Ophthalmic Research at the Cole Eye Institute. He was also recently appointed as the inaugural director of The Tony and Leona Campane Center for Excellence in Image-Guided Surgery and Advanced Imaging Research in 2017.
Maintaining a particular interest in advanced vitreoretinal imaging, including intraoperative optical coherence tomography (OCT) and precision medicine through higher order image analysis. OCT is a non-contact imaging modality that provides high resolution, cross-sectional and three-dimensional information of tissue architecture and microstructure. Dr. Ehlers has been a pioneer in the application of OCT technology to ophthalmic surgical procedures. He has been involved in the development and optimization of multiple prototype operating microscope integrated OCT systems allowing for real-time OCT-based visualization of intraocular maneuvers. He has also developed novel OCT-friendly surgical instrumentation and novel intraoperative OCT software platforms. Dr. Ehlers has led the 2 largest intraoperative OCT clinical studies that have included over 2000 research subjects to date.
In addition to intraoperative OCT, Dr. Ehlers' research has focused on advanced imaging and the development of computerized analysis platforms. These higher order analysis systems are aimed at the identification of image-based biomarkers for precision medicine and personalized care. Areas of particular focus has included, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Ehlers has participated as a principal -investigator on numerous clinical trials, including studies on macular degeneration, retinal venous occlusive disease, and ophthalmic imaging. Furthermore, he has served as associate editor for Retina, was co-chief editor of the 5th edition of Wills Eye Manual, associate editor of the British Journal of Ophthalmology. In addition, Dr. Ehlers has authored over 125 peer-reviewed publications.
A longstanding member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Society of Heed Fellows, the Wills Eye Hospital Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Macula Society, the Retina Society, and the American Medical Association, Dr. Ehlers serves on the serves on the Ophthalmic Technology Assessment Committee. Dr. Ehlers has is a three time recipient of the Cleveland Clinic Innovator Award, was named among the Top 40 under 40 Ophthalmologists by The Ophthalmologist in 2015, received a Senior Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists, and received an Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2014, among many other awards.
