With more than 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Parkhurst has been of counsel with Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C., since 2016, having been a partner with Hughes, Socol, Piers, Resnick & Dym from 2008 to 2016. His areas of expertise include intellectual property law, including litigation, transactions and counseling in patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret law. Prior to obtaining these roles, he served as a partner and manager of the intellectual property practice with Holland & Knight from 2000 to 2007, and with Schiff, Hardin & Waite from 1987 to 1998.
Mr. Parkhurst previously worked as a partner with Hill & Simpson from 1998 to 2000. When general practice firms began to add intellectual property partners, he started and managed the Intellectual Property Practice at Jenner & Block from 1984 to 1987. Earlier in his career, he was an associate and partner with Trexler, Wolters, Bushnell & Fosse from 1972 to 1984, and an associate with Wolfe, Hubbard, Voit & Osann from 1968 to 1972. In addition to his work in the field, he served as an adjunct professor with the John Marshall Law School from 1980 to 1984, and with the Chicago Kent Law School at the Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago from 2001 to the present.
Mr. Parkhurst began his career as a student at the University of Illinois, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1963. He then studied at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1966 before joining the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a captain from 1966 to 1968. He has been admitted to practice in the state of Illinois, as well as before the U.S. District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois including its Trial Bar, the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh and Federal Circuits, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the U.S. Supreme Court.
A respected leader in the field, Mr. Parkhurst is affiliated with a number of professional organizations and has written numerous articles in professional journals. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, the Licensing Executives Society, and the Chicago Bar Association, He has served as a mediator in private practice in intellectual property and other areas, and was a hearing officer of the Illinois Pollution Control Board. He has litigated numerous copyright, patent, trademark and trade secret cases throughout the Unites States.
In addition, he has been active with several community organizations, including as a member, director, legal counsel and former president of Lifeline Pilots, Inc. He is a past president and a member of the Chicago Literary Club, and was a director and legal counsel for the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. He is a board member of the St. Sebastian Players, and a member and former secretary of the Adventurers Club of Chicago. In addition to his primary activities, Mr. Parkhurst is the owner and operator of Perfectly Legal Productions, LLC, with his wife. Here, they generate, develop, write scripts, cast and produce live theatrical productions of significant legal events and trials for continuing legal education credits.
Throughout his career, Mr. Parkhurst has been recognized for his contributions and achievements. He holds an AV Preeminent Rating with Martindale Hubbell, and he is a Leading Lawyer with the Illinois Leading Lawyers Network. Named the Best of U.S. Intellectual Property Lawyers in 2007, he has been named an Illinois Super Lawyer in 2005, 2006, 2008, and each year from 2012 to 2016, and was named one of the Best Lawyers in America from 2005 to 2007, 2013, and 2018. In his spare time, Mr. Parkhurst enjoys flying, scuba diving, photography and theatrical acting.
